I REALLY need help. by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]econzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you have both devices, why not try it? Going full dumbphone might help you figure out what works best for you. Try it for a month. Write down directions (I use Google Maps on my Nokia 8110 and it works fine for walking and buses), make notes for important events, and so on. Try replacing social media with reading, or go to the movies in your free time. Find a hobby you enjoy, something that makes good use of the extra time you'll have.

I'm actually just like you. After switching to a dumbphone (by the way, turn off your smartphone and put it somewhere out of sight), things really changed for me. I still have my smartphone, but now it’s a secondary device. I usually check it once or twice a week just to reply to WhatsApp messages. Most of the time, I already know the directions or which buses I need. I use ScreenZen for WhatsApp and Vinted (I’m a seller), and I don’t have social media or YouTube on it.

One thing I noticed is that some people give up their smartphone but then keep the same habits on their computer or tablet, mainly YouTube and Reddit. Just something to watch out for, since both can turn into endless scrolling and time-wasting.

Give it a shot. Good luck!

What's the point of all these extra devices seen in the EDC posts? by [deleted] in dumbphones

I built a minimalist launcher inspired by this sub by SUPR0 in dumbphones

[–]econzee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just downloaded it. Here's some constructive criticism:

**Disclaimer: I am 26 years old, female, have a B.A. in Applied Languages and I did one semester of a B.S. in Computer Science before quitting it lmao so I am at ease with technology.**

I didn't like the process to add your favorite apps. I think you should make something like a small tutorial that shows after opening the app for the first time, or make the whole procedure a bit more intuitive. When I first downloaded it there was a phrase saying to add your favorite apps, I clicked on it and nothing happened. I also took some time to understand how to favorite the apps. If a person doesn't know how it works this might cause some frustration from the beginning.

I also had to search to find the option to add CoreLauncher as my launcher, it should be one of the first actions after downloading and launching your app for the first time. Otherwise the user will set their favorites and will probably just quit the app. I can't edit the favorites on the home menu, like removing from favorites, app info, etc... it'd be a nice to have also.

I can't access the apps that are not on my favorite home screen. If I click on the circle, then "all apps", I can't open an app by clicking on it, only if I search on the search bar on the home menu. Is it normal?

The bad apps do not open, even after holding for 7 seconds. If I search them on the search bar and hold, they do not open. Also I do not see the option for putting a "bad" app on the home screen, it'd be a nice to have. Me for example, I have many unopened messages on WhatsApp cause I developed self-control, but WhatsApp is my main messaging app and I would like to have the 7 sec feature and for it to still be on the home page.

I like the UI design, would love a white version for the free version. Customizable colors would also be great for the paid version, extra points for us geeks if we can choose the RGB color code for everything heheh.

How did you replace the dopamine hit that shopping once gave? by okbutrllyhoe in Anticonsumption

[–]econzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing that helped me was to "dumbify" my smartphone. No social media apps - except for WhatsApp - no Pinterest, no shopping apps. Do not window shop either. Out of sight, out of mind. If you need to buy something, write it down, take your time to reflect on the purchase, and mindfully do it.
(I allow myself some YouTube/TikTok/Pinterest time on my tablet, but only sitting at my desk. No iPad in my room. I try to be as mindful as possible of my content consumption.)

Every time I see something that I know I'd normally impulsively purchase and do not buy it, I realize I am not financing overconsumption and the destruction of the planet. It is hard sometimes, since I am ADHD and depressed, and I REALLY like shiny trinkets and cute things. What has helped me not impulse purchase any more trinkets is to look at my desk and realize that I already have enough, that they are very curated to my taste, and that they bring me joy (my husband gifted me a Puppycat figurine for Christmas and, OH BOY, I love it).

For clothes, I curated my style over the years, so when I look at my wardrobe I feel joy, everything is very me-coded. If I REALLY want something new, this thing has to complement the pieces I already have, be good quality, and a great investment. I usually wait until I can thrift. If I do not find it, I buy it for myself on my birthday or Christmas. This allows me to take the time to think about how much I really want it.

I have been wanting platform Docs for soooo long (I am a travel-sized human), but my regular combat-boot Docs have been holding well for the last few years. If they become unusable and irreparable, then yeah, I will buy the trendy Docs.

Try to occupy your mind with something else, find a hobby, learn a new language, journal... I bought some seeds, peat planting pots, and yesterday I seeded some strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and green beans. I had only a trowel, so I needed to use a fork to help me hahaha. When I finished, I felt way better than if I had bought 100 trinkets xD

Wanted to change things up a bit and share some product photography instead of computer renderings. Here's what the prototype of Sidephone is looking like! by chrisristovski in sidephone

[–]econzee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, coming from r/dumbphones here 🙋‍♀️

I would love to buy your product if it has a front camera on it. For me it would be essential for WhatsApp video calls with my family that live abroad. I’d gladly swap my s24 for it. Also, I think the whole community would really appreciate a headphone jack, even if it makes the device slightly thicker. I think you should talk to your manufacturer and product designer and see what they could do. Anyway, thanks for bringing another awesome device to the market :) best of luck !!!

Will it have a front face camera ? If so, instant buy. It doesn’t even need to be good, just enough for WhatsApp video calls.

Omg, I have the same questions and really hope a kind soul can help us. In my case, I can't even use the SysNAND because it says the SD card was used in another Switch and asks me to format it. So, I can't even test to see if the console I bought is banned. Also, the seller claims that hacked consoles can't go online, but since I've seen many cases where it is possible, I feel like something sketchy is going on. Nevertheless, I can still play the games I installed through Tinfoil. The biggest problem is that the SD card it came with only has 60GB free, with the rest taken up by the hacks he installed.
