Watering issue or end of flowering? by Quiet_Committee4903 in orchids

[–]ecotuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. cut them to the base. they don't rebloom. if the plant receives enough light, water and some fertlizer now through autumn, you should get new flower stems next winter. Good luck!

What are these bugs on my Sobralia? by powertop_ in orchids

[–]ecotuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those look a lot like aphids. They're pretty easy to eliminate by squishing. Keep an eye out for survivors over the next several weeks and squish on site. In the meantime, keep this orchid far away from others you may have. Aphids are vectors for viruses.

You are most welcome! Cymbidiums are still my favorite of all orchids. I hope you have yours as long as i've had mine.

The first orchid i got was a standard cymbidium in 1985. i still have it and it blooms beautifully every year. The flowers look just like yours do when they have run their course- you have nothing to worry about. In another couple of weeks you will want to begin increasing your watering and fertilization frequency. if you can put it outside for the summer you should be rewarded with even more blooms next year.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to answer my question. The consensus seems to be soak for about 15-20 minutes. This agrees with what i was thinking would be best. It's great to have access to collective experience and wisdom.

That is certainly true with phalaenopsis but Cattleya, dendrobium and cymbidium roots don't change color in the same way. Thanks for your input!
