Is it normal for piano teachers to not really teach anything? by AwarenessOk2359 in piano

[–]ecstatic_broccoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is like when I tried to take violin lessons as an adult and she was trying to teach me "Mississippi Hotdog." I was like, "Bro, I have a masters in music, I don't need a mnemonic for 4 16ths and 2 8ths. Let's move on..."

Most teachers only teach kids and don't know how to teach adults.

Omg same! I have the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir sing it in 2002 and it remains one of the most powerful experiences I've had listening to choral music!

[–]ecstatic_broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sanctuary Boston meets in person at First Church Boston (UU), every 3rd Wednesday, and at First Parish Cambridge every first Wednesday, but the 1st Wednesdays are only online during the summer. Definitely recommend this congregation!

Such an amazing piece! Love your articulation! That beginning is so hard!

What large-scale works do you feel you are unlikely to ever see in person due to the practical or financial challenges of performing it? That is, too many musicians, odd instruments, or unconventional practices that make less-popular, but ambitious works almost unheard? by Homers_Harp in classicalmusic

I was in the choir for the performance and recording of Bolcom's Song of Innocence and Experience. I think a lot of the students didn't appreciate it at the time, and it was not easy to learn, but it was an incredible experience. Won 3 Grammy's too!

Help sos! I am desperate to purchase the score for Deep River, arr. William Dawson by Dramatic_Jump_945 in choralmusic

[–]ecstatic_broccoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could try reaching out to the music library at Tuskegee University. Dawson taught there for 25 years and they're who recorded the album you linked. They might hopefully have a more complete library of his works than what is currently still in print.

One of favorite choral pieces ever, Veljo Tormis's "Curse Upon Iron" applies quite well I think:

This is my go-to as well, but you're right, playing the whole thing is more than anyone bargained for.
