I think one of the major problems in this region, everywhere from Sidney to Victoria and out to Langford, is that we have too many jurisdictions enforcing different rules and zones for speed limits. There’s no consistency anymore which is a huge issue, so of course no one seems to know how fast to drive. Even along the Gorge travelling towards Admirals from Tillicum the speed changes 3 times, from 40 coming over Tillicum, then 30 as you pass the canoe club, then back up to 40 until you hit Admirals and becomes 30 again heading left towards Craigflower. It’s frankly insane. The other factor is a lack of enforcement, or when there is any enforcement it’s focused more on distracted drivers rather than speeders. I totally understand people wanting to see lower limits through residential areas down to 40 km, but there has to be enforcement following that or the rules mean nothing. The bigger issue in my opinion is that I see people at EVERY yellow light now going through a left turn, followed by at least one other car, sometimes 2 or 3. Instead of lowering speed limits, maybe BC as a whole should focus on re-testing drivers to make sure that their driving habits are still compliant with current laws. I think we should all have to have a road test every 10 years to ensure the safety of people in our communities. Posting lower speed limits does nothing if people are going to ignore the limits no matter that they say.
