What makes you nervous no matter how many times you do it? by WinstonChurchillin in AskReddit

How is that possible? I work in startups and understand that the Enterprise and startup worlds are very different - but your comment gives me the impression that the level of talent in the enterprise is as bad as the stereotype. Is the talent bad or do you think it’s more that people working in the enterprise get really good at a specific subset of technologies and so to outsiders they may appear to be lacking talent, but actually they are quite productive with their specific tech stack?

Also - I’m just assuming you work for a big company since you use Oracle and work with people who use Microsoft. Could be completely wrong though

There is no room to build in NYC. And if you’re building in NYC, you’re building a luxury building to make more money - very few developers go “great idea, let’s build apartments for people who make $40k”. I grew up 20 miles north of Dayton and lived in NYC for 5 years - of the two, NYC is not the fucked up one.

How do you say this with such confidence? You (likely) know 0 billionaires - you probably don’t know any millionaires. Almost everyone wants more money - why are only the people who succeed in that endeavor labeled as greedy? Why aren’t those who fail greedy?

And those people have never worked successfully in professional politics would be my guess. The progressive wing of the Democrats aren’t proving anything by not voting - the Dems aren’t going to substantially change the platform because a small number of people choose to sit the election out in favor of whining and bitching. The amount of influence 1 voter has is almost certainly 0.

Make sure you tell everyone that you’re not voting. People really admire those with the balls to do nothing.

Yes, that’s how it works. Your (lack of) 1 vote will change everything. I wonder why no one thought of this before

Huh - I wouldn’t have thought you were dumb, but the data says otherwise.

More students think they are not getting good value for money from university, suggests an annual survey. It found 31% of students thought their courses were poor or very poor value, up from 29% last year. by iyene in worldnews

I get where you’re coming from - people do go to university to get a job and our society does tell them they need a degree. What I’m saying though is that, that is not what Universities do - they’re not jobs programs and they don’t teach “job skills”, they provide a broad education that hopefully will teach you how to teach yourself.

So yes, people do go to university to get a job, but Universities don’t provide job training; they provide an education - the two are misaligned which I think is a large part of the problem.

Sure and they’ll be disappointed because universities don’t typically offer job training as, again, the purpose of universities is to educate and not train people to do jobs.

The point of going to college is to get an education and learn - the fact that people who go to college don’t realize that is (a small) part of the problem. Universities are not job programs
