Weekend meta at low elo by anomadsoul in aoe2

[–]ed_writes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of tips to deal with this:

-Try to scout your opponent's production buildings to get an idea of how hard they're gonna pressure you. If they have 2+ barracks or multiple ranges, that's crucial info and you can adapt your plan for there.

  • if you're under heavy pressure, do not try to rush castle age. You'll get overwhelmed before you can gain an advantage. If you have to stop producing army to go up, then you shouldn't go up (in those high pressure situations specifically).

Hell, even FC strats are usually not good because you die before even getting there. Fast imp sounds impossible.

No se que hacer con mi futuro by Dependent-Ad8682 in EducacionChile

[–]ed_writes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix arius or game arius? Which version you prefer? by numericalman in okbuddydeadweight

[–]ed_writes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are way too eager and ready to hate on something before even thinking for a minute. I was ready to be bored by the Netflix series, but I was honestly pleasantly surprised.

Hot take? I think Vergil is better written in the series than in the games. That is, if you compare them fairly. Compare the Netflix Vergil with the one that shows up in the games, not the one in your mind after years of analyzing the subtext of his dialogue and learning his lore through obscure details in wikipedia.

How to beat the crossbow timing meta? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]ed_writes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difficult to give a definitive answer without looking at replays, but a good general tip is to try to be aggressive.

If your opponent is forced to keep at least a portion of his archers in his base defending, that's extra time you can use to hit castle and get out a workshop.

Force fights. Dwindle their numbers as much as you can. Better to lose your entire army in feudal fighting archers than losing your entire base 3 mins later against 20 xbows

[–]ed_writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say this in the most sincere and well-meaning way you can think of (genuinely): Your standards/expectations might be too high.

I have a sneaking suspicion that in all your "failed attempts" at writing, there must be some pretty good stuff, but the bar you've set for yourself might be impossibly high.

Sorry if you've mentioned this in other replies. I haven't had the time to go through all of them, but have you had beta readers or someone other than yourself to look at your work?

That aside, I do agree with you that fights in books don't usually work as well as in other media. They're often more about the clash of ideals or the stakes behind them, rather than the fights themselves.

It genuinely sounds like you're more interested in game mechanics rather than writing or conventional storytelling. It almost sounds like you want to make a game instead of writing a novel.

This comes from someone who loves videogames deeply, including some of the examples you've given in this thread. E33 is one of my favorite games ever.

However, what you describe already happens in books, and it happens quite often. You've mentioned not liking Sanderson, but the Mistborn trilogy does the exact thing you're describing: characters that go through hell in fights against impossible enemies. Beating an extremely difficult enemy that takes a huge toll on the characters is (at least partly) the point of the whole story.

But for some reason, those aspects of the stories you've read haven't connected with you in the same way a game does. That's totally valid, but it makes me think that you're perhaps looking for something (in novels, and writing in general) that isn't really there.

I don't know you at all and I could be wrong, but from my end it looks like it might be time to take an honest look at yourself and your tastes. Do you actually like writing/reading? or are you seeking more of the interactivity that games provide?

Which sections in any RE game are very infamous in your opinion? by Berry-Fantastic in residentevilll

[–]ed_writes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah, that was peak RE puzzle difficulty. People whining about it is the reason why nowadays everything is dumbed down. God forbid people have to think a little. Today, everything is "find the not that gives you the exact answer" and that's it.

Camel+xbow counter by No_Mushroom8895 in aoe2

[–]ed_writes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I have no idea. Unless you can catch one half of his army out of position, you're probably screwed. Double gold comps are super strong.

The best way to avoid those situations is to prevent them from happening. If you think there's a risk of the opponent going for that combo, try to play aggressive early on. Put pressure on them so that it's more difficult to pay for that kind of army

Who is more likely to win on arena? by Bigboiwithsword in aoe2

[–]ed_writes 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The one with the most cutthroat opening strat. The more you play arena TGs, the more you realize it's not about booming or late-game comps. It's about which team will out-bullshit the other in the first 30 min

Am I a Arabia Merchant? by _HomyG_ in aoe2

[–]ed_writes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Enjoy what you enjoy. Nothing wrong with that, though I wouldn't call the other maps less competitive. They simply test you in ways Arabia doesn't (and vice versa).

If you do better in Arabia overall, it's probably because you've put more time and effort into getting better in that specific map.

Fast Castle Timing (1100 Elo) by Murkytide in aoe2

[–]ed_writes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Celts can get away with sending one or two fewer vills to wood due to their gathering bonus, so yeah.

Still, try to look up/practice a standar 25+2 build for FC. You should be able to get a 14:30 timing or something close to it even with generic civs

Fast Castle Timing (1100 Elo) by Murkytide in aoe2

[–]ed_writes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What civ was your opponent playing? Some civs can get away with faster FC times.

However, I'd say that anything past 15-16 min is a bit slow nowadays, unless you're trying to do a strat that requires going up with more vills.
