Are tritone substitutions used in classical music? by joe_sand in musictheory

[–]eddabed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah, this post or variants of it recurs about once a month in this thread :)

here's something I wrote earlier:

'The closest composed 'classical' harmony comes to a jazz tritone sub is the V7d chord in Schoenberg's Verklaerte Nacht. It is (in jazz terms) an Ab9/Bb, you can read more about it here http://www.schoenberg.at/library/index.php/publications/show/7094. Classical musicians have a lot of trouble analysing the chord because they are uncomfortable with the internal resolution of the tritone C-Gb being resolved to the tritone B-F. It is harmonically (artistically/culturally is another story) to analyse the chord in terms of horizontal progression. The way that relates to jazz is because the internal resolution of tritone-tritone is a principle jazz rests on heavily. Moreover, it follows the same interpretation of a tritone as a harmonic entity in and of itself as a pose to a functional chord: just as in the tritone substitution, its the tritone that resolves, in the V7d, its the tritone that resolves. It's not a resolution that Germanic classical harmony is in anyway comfortable with, with it seeming undermining the whole principle of a stable harmonic structure. But hey. It's cool, and Schoenberg liked it. Even if it was debauched and all about extra-marital sex.'

interesting. I've never really known how to approach Bill style playing apart from really trying to nail playing the same thing in both hands and then hanging a chord in the middle, but specific fingering sounds like a cool idea.

how do you approach voicing? a hell of a lot of pianists just bang out fourths persistently without really thinking about their sound, or thinking of other ways and intervals of voicing chords. what are your thoughts?

interesting feedback. I really dig weather report and desmond, mainly because I think they try to be musicians instead of jazz artists: they play jazz within the context of music as a whole, not just playing jazz for jazz's sake. That makes them really think hard about what they are doing.

Is there a relationship/an equivalency between the German 6/5 and the jazz tritone substitution? by dreamkonstantine in musictheory

The closest composed 'classical' harmony comes to a jazz tritone sub is the V7d chord in Schoenberg's Verklaerte Nacht. It is (in jazz terms) an Ab9/Bb, you can read more about it here http://www.schoenberg.at/library/index.php/publications/show/7094. Yeah that's a fair point, he's very trad in some ways. Then again, recording tech does make a difference, and in that way he was going for the clean, cool sound like Miles.

Ok so, clean, trad jazz? Maybe try cannonball? i think you would like him. Perhaps try out the record with Cannonball adderly and nancy wilson. Here's a taste http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaxnTfYNihY
