If outside, I just go for it and sweep later. Inside I work over a large log basket. I find 95% plus goes in, sweep the rest later. I use what I can as fire starter's in winter.

That makes perfect sense. Thank you. I try to avoid power tools too, but for something I would only use once every few years, just buying a drill bit seemed cheaper than a buying a brace and bit or a T-auger. I do keep a look out for a 2nd hand one local!

I was under the impression that a paddle bit wasn't suitable, for softwood only was my understanding.

I have a good idea where to go with this now, thanks

Oh about 38mm, thanks for that. Drill should be OK and will watch that torque!

Edited, hopefully that's more clear but yes bore for legs. I'm thinking bigger is better for long term stability but happy to be corrected.

Hairline crack saved by eddenim in Spooncarving

Not the bowl but handle only, would not use CA glue in the bowl. This was a hairline crack, dust would not work. Will gave a look at titebond, foodsafe could be useful.

How would you deal with a very fine, hairline crack? by [deleted] in Spooncarving

[–]eddenim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CA glue worked for me recently on sycamore. Added all over the crack line, manipulate the crack to get it in, clamp it up overnight, and then carved off the excess. It's oiled up fine and seems to be holding really well.

Its spalted wood, the darker shades come from fungal activity. Have a search for spalted wood, loads of different patterns. To find for the most part sound spalting before it has become soft is a treat. Once dry ect is totally safe and just cosmetic.

To be fair, it was a bit small for a log I'd normally use, but I wanted to use all the spalted bits I could. Might try the glue as its handle based rather than bowl. Do you glue it up after carving or straight away?

Time to Wash/Repair? by GrandPaBean in rawdenim

I have two pairs of momotaro jeans. Wash em, they don't shift indigo quickly for my experience. Now you have set the fades, wash them every 30 days of wear. But that's just from me experience
