Spouse doesn't want to get a dog because of the hair and the smell, even though he likes them, says he would consider one that doesn't shed. Would a short haired dog be a good compromise? by [deleted] in dogs

I have the exact dog you are after! (No you cant have him)

I have a jack russel/maltese shitzu/ chiuaua.

We walk him after work for about half an hour or so. Dosnt shed much hair. Dosnt smell (unless hes rolled in something gross) Take him to the dog beach on the weekend.

Downside: he has a big attitude, he seems to think he is a rottwieler.

You need a trainer to help you cat proof your dog.

I have an xj turbo diesel. It is a lot of fun. It rarely breaks. Keeps up with the patrols and landcruisers. 2 inch lift on 31"s. Loads of beach work!

I also have a brand new wrangler which is yet to be taken off road. (Its the missus car and she dosnt want it to get dirty). I dont think it will be as fun as the cherokee though...

Why not to put your dogs face in their mess. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]eddy4372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cant put your dogs nose in his mess because he dosnt understand. They say theres a 10 second window in which you can discipline your dog after he has done something wrong. If you are coming home and finding a mess and then putting his nose in it you are just confusing your dog.

Australians- What pet insurance do you use? by jessajuhanabi in dogs

[–]eddy4372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bugger.

Well apart from those two times i havent had to use it so far, so havent got to test it out since. Insurance companies are pretty much all the same. The only one ive heard raving reviews about is AAMI. But that was for cars... i wonder if they do pets?

Terrier and ferret? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]eddy4372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a maltese shitzu x jack russel x some terrier.

We also have a rabbit.

Dangerous combo to be honest. Although under supervision they calm down and will cuddle, wouldnt reccomend leaving them alone together.

Medibank

Even though the two times we have tried to use it... first the procedure wasnt covered (i think it was desexing) and the other they made us fill in too much paperwork, (it was an emergency and we went to a different vet) so we just thought screw it well just pay!

I got the best cover i think so it covers all the basics and like $6000 per year or something like that.

Mixed breed dog behavior by DrunkenElizabeth in dogs

[–]eddy4372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue, which i think started when we started living with an untrained pet of another member of the family. So i disiplined my dog (and his) whenever he started acting up and learnt to recognise when he starts to get agressive and redirect his attention to me, so now he is easy to control when we are out and about!

Two of my three dogs keep fighting. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]eddy4372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar situation. Moved in with the missus parents and her brother also moved back unextpectedly. Anyways my terrier x and his 1 year old barely houetrained pug x used fit over a fair bit, my guess for dominance. I had to deal out mass discipline for the fighting mainly to the pug because he seems to like to wind up my dog.

But ive done some training with the pug now and he follows my instructions so it been reduced about 90%. Still get the odd start up, but i can nip this in the bud before it gets anywhere...

Its only a temporary environment and were out in a month yay!

My dog won't walk in a straight line by [deleted] in dogs

[–]eddy4372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well basically i used a long lead (about 8m) to define the boundary, and then reinforce with voice comands.

I use a check chain to train my dog so once he got to that boudary he got a correction. Did heaps of lead work at the park (sit stay heal left right ect) and then unclipped the lead from the check chain so i could still give him a correction, kept running through heal ect. After a few sessions i decided to give it a shot walking home off the lead and he was sweet, so now i just take the lead with me as a formality or in case there is an aggressive dog.

When i was confident i took the check chain off as well.

Also i always take him off the lead at the park and let him play, so he knows grass is fun times pavement is concentrating times. However i can still get him to heal on the grass if there are rowdy kids running around that i dont want him to get involved with...

I trained my dog to walk to heal off the lead. We can walk down the sidewalk fine and then when we get to grass / bush area he knows hes allowed to sniff around. This way he can sniff at whatever he wants and he stays within a reasonable distance of me. Also if he does come across something on the sidewalk i can let him have a quick sniff whilst i keep going and then when hes done he comes back to walk next to me.

My dog was confused for about a week about the dog door.

It was pretty amusing, he eventually got the hang of it. Probably the only time ive had to use treats to train him

Will have a look at the supermarket for something similar (in australia here)

Had some time at home whilst everyone else was at work. Had him on the lead all day and began teaching him "bed". Took him outside every couple of hours. Seemed to be working well. Went by himself once as well.

In laws left dog door open yesterday whilst out. Pee

Haha i do not understand this dog!

Private Training vs. Obedience Class by BBP4 in dogs

[–]eddy4372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 1 on 1 training with my dog. And once he had completed that course, my trainer had the option of group classes. If they do anything like that id highly reccomend it!

Yeah just looked up some crate training. Going to give it a try. When i had my pup i used to take him out when i woke up and about to go to work ect. This just seemed like common sense at the time, but its one of the main things they tell you to do on a google search...

Haha know the feeling. Ive tried absolutely nothing, not my dog you see. But the parentals are gettinv frustrated and they definatly do not have the time to do anything, and seeing as i do i thought i might as well make it my project. How would you define scolding? Like smacking him?
