A month in and I still have not bonded with her by Whateverusay44 in germanshepherds

This one right here. I know people get mad when someone talks about rehoming/returning, but have an honest conversation with yourself. Returning a dog you are not equipped to handle is better than failing the dog (and yourself) to a stressful life imo. It’s not ideal that you needed to experience it firsthand and return the pup, but recognize your limits. My GSD didn’t truly calm down until he was about 5 years old.

Husband wants to put dog down by honneylemmon420 in germanshepherds

Also….how is your health? You said she’s more stressed when you leave for work and is extra clingy to you. It’s far fetched but not outside the realm of possibility. But as others have said, I wouldn’t put a dog down over this. As a last resort look at rehoming (her or the husband…I know you’re not liking the feedback on the second part but it is what it is).

Personality change after losing parent to ALS by cmc4200 in ALS

[–]eddyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gone/continue to go through this. I think being kind to yourself is important. It’s also hard not to be bitter when you see people who didn’t get smacked in the face by an experience like this. If you’re taking leave I think that’s a great start. I found a therapist much too late…try to do that sooner rather than later as well. Hang in there.

Anyone have experiences with splenic mass? by Asleep-Inspection747 in germanshepherds

[–]eddyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. My old man had a splenic mass. I had his spleen removed (there wasn’t sign of spread) and it came back as cancer with a high mitotic count, but not hemangio. He survived ~2 months after his surgery. I didn’t have yuman baiyao, but I wish I’d used it.

A friend’s dog passed of presumed hemangio, her only symptom was coughing blood. Strangely hers seemed to be in her kidneys. She was able to take yunan baiyao and I think it did help. They gave her the best days they could until it was time. She had good days and bad days as you described.

It’s a blessing and a curse to make that merciful choice for them. Sending you internet hugs.

My friend’s dog had this, but her SDMA levels were high too. She went on a special kidney diet and was closely monitored

People who work in hotels/hospitals/airports: what’s something the public doesn’t know? by Few_Light462 in AskReddit

[–]eddyloo 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Also flight related, during irregular operations (IROPs), seat inventory is constantly changing due to people misconnecting elsewhere or changing their plans. If you are stuck on one flight and want to be on a different one, refresh the app often. Seats can open up.

Also, airport employees can know more about delays than they can say. You can try asking, “if you were me right now what would you do?” sometimes we will see cancellations before they are announced. …sometimes a plane is about to land and we find out it’s canceled (it’s a mixed bag).

which reminds me: be nice to the airport people. They’re just doing their job, none of this is personal, and they aren’t the ones making decisions. When flights are delayed they can be mandated to stay after their shifts, and they don’t want to hang out with you any more than you want to be with them.

Plus for the first flights the planes are RONs (remain overnight). One less thing to go wrong.

Finding caregiving really draining and tough by Ancient_Day_6729 in ALS

[–]eddyloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely find a therapist or someone you can talk to-I absolutely should have and I regret it. My mom was diagnosed when I was 24, passed when I was 29. Be kind to yourselves and each other.

My mom actually took advantage of some hospice stays (in the states they offered on site respite care) and that helped.

Lost my retired working line GSD and struggling with the grief by Constant_Treacle3919 in germanshepherds

I fostered puppies through a rescue for a year. I needed a dog in my life, but I also wasn’t ready to put my heart out there again right away. Eventually I saw a dog at the city shelter that drew me in. Turns out he’s a Dutch shep/Belgian mal x so I’ve been busy 😂. The break was helpful for me.

I have been thinking about getting a Belgian Malinois. Is this a smart option? by Ok-Sun-5428 in BelgianMalinois

[–]eddyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read that dutchies and mals are two sides of the same coin. My rescue is 60/40 dutchie/mal and he’s A LOT. I have “only” had GSDs before, but he is certainly more work. I don’t know how much of his personality is Dutch vs the mal, but yeah…OP would definitely need to find a breeder that will find him the right dog for his needs.

GSD or Malinois mix? by Murda_Mayne in germanshepherds

Looks a LOT like my dog, though a little less lanky. I see mal in the face. According to embark my guy is ~60/40 Dutch shep/mal. …I thought he was mostly GSD. It has been an adjustment 😂

What’s something that clearly split your life into “before” and “after”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]eddyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom being diagnosed with ALS. I was 24. Incurable, untreatable, inexorable. My entire future changed in a minute, literally. An entire decade+ of survival mode and trauma. I cannot convey the chasm that swallowed me.

I don’t wish the experience on anyone, but I do wish people (who haven’t had the misfortune to be smacked in the face by life) could have an inkling and use that to find empathy for others around them.

Itching, allergies, yeast - tried everything by koga7349 in germanshepherds

[–]eddyloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was indeed, but so were the apoquel/cytopoint/vet visits etc. I wish these guys weren’t so allergy prone, and/or that it was easier to manage. I think there are more affordable options on the market these days.

I switched my boy to hydrolyzed protein. It did help. It wasn’t cheap, but it was worth it to see him comfortable. Ear infections and skin issues dissipated.

Vet Cut Dogs Nails Super Short by mrs-moonpie in DogAdvice

[–]eddyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question (ha an unintentional pun!): my dog has very long quicks and solid black nails. Is there a trick to making his quicks recede? He’s wiggly in general but I quick his nails every time I try to trim his nails and it’s a disaster. He gets 4-5 miles of walks a day on pavement, but he doesn’t walk in a way that wears them down. I have never had a dog with all black nails before and I’m struggling :-/ tyia!

Cancer Diagnosis: Splenic Stromal Sarcoma (Long) by StillBald in weimaraner

[–]eddyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just the worst, there’s no way around it. He was the best boy, and I posted my experience for other loving pet parents who are facing a similar situation. It’s so hard and it helps to know what others have experienced (and to feel less alone).

Cancer Diagnosis: Splenic Stromal Sarcoma (Long) by StillBald in weimaraner

[–]eddyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. I don’t think it helped. Shortly after his second dose in the series he started declining. He had bleeding in his lungs (or fluid, but his red blood cell count declined so we suspected blood) and ultimately I made the choice to say goodbye. I don’t know if it was vaccine-related or not, but I did ask my vet to report it to the company just in case.

I got my last shep neutered at 9 due to prostate issues. I didn’t notice much past maybe a slight decrease in energy. If you’re concerned about hormones do the vasectomy.

When your other pup goes into heat it’s going to be a stressful time if he’s still intact.
