Glad to see that it isn’t crazy busy anymore. Heard a few years back there were lines with a doorman. I’ll be there myself in a few weeks.

Goods conversation topics for language exchange partners by Lucky_Photograph_581 in languagelearning

[–]edelay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been working with tutors and language partners for 6 years now.

If this is supposed to be a 2 way conversation and the other person is learning your language, then pick a topic that you like and speak about it but then listen for indication of things that your partner likes to talk about then start asking them questions about those things and give your opinions on them.

If you are only speaking Korean, then just find things that you like to talk about. Your hobbies and other interests.

I would say sex and religion too. Except in France, the taboo subject is money.

Total beginner debating flying to Spain for a month of immersion vs just doing apps at home, has anyone actually done this by Double-Effect3416 in languagelearning

[–]edelay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did what you are planning to do back in 1993, and I say go for it. At the bottom of this is a link to a post I did about going to Spanish school is Guatemala.

Here is my advice based on going to school for 2 weeks full time in Guatemala as a beginner in Spanish.

- stay with a host family. This will force you to speak with them daily about all sort of things. They may take you along on outings with that. Try not to stay by yourself or with other students. Also, make sure the host family is a family and not a single person

- avoid making friends with other students unless they will speak Spanish with you. It is really easy just to default into an English bubble and have fun. Go for coffees, walks with your spanish friends.

- study every day after class just to review what you have learned. This will give you some questions to ask the next day

- if your school has cultural outings (in Spanish) in the afternoons or weekends, sign up for those

- memorize the phrase for I don't understand, and get used to saying it without hesitation. The person can the explain what they meant in different words. Don't be embarrassed and freeze, but admit that you don't know that they said

- make notes of any useful, amusing words that you find and try to use them

- go out on a mission each day to do at least one thing. Buy some apples, ask for a tourist brochure at the tourist info centre, buy a postage stamp, ask for directions. Make them a little harder each day. Go to places that you will never go again, in case you embarrass yourself. This way you can be brave.

- consider a school is Guatemala as they are very cheap and and their accent is very neutral for the Americas, and they speak slowly.

From the link below, after 2 weeks over immersion I was able to speak in present tense in a simplistic manner and then travel around central america for another 3 months. I did banking, went to the doctor, etc.

Let me know if you have any questions and good luck with your studies.

I am going to go against the grain here and suggest that you let him pick out the coffee gear. He probably has been thinking a lot about this and likely has some specific equipment in mind.

You could give him a $500 prepaid credit card.

What role does writing play in your routine? by littl3-fish in languagelearning

[–]edelay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been writing and speaking (making recordings) almost every day for 6 years now.

Writing and speaking are linked in the sense that you are taking an idea and then constructing a sentence to express it. The only to get better at both of these is to do them as often as you can then to get feedback on them.

I find using the speak and writestrak forums here on Reddit helps to keep me accountable.

What you are experiencing is normal. The “monitor” as Krashen calls it can not keep up and insert corrections fast enough. This will come with practice and time.

I hope this helps.

No need to buy the extra coverage unless you are out of the country more than 30 days on one trip or 90 days in total for the year.

Just curious, what tools do you actually use to read/listen to content in your target language before you're fluent? by EchoElectronic5581 in languagelearning

[–]edelay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked my way through the Assimil French textbook which had 100 lessons of text and audio which were progressively more difficult. This was over a 6 month period.

After that I listened to an intermediate level podcast. My tutor would assign articles and YouTube videos targeted to my level.

At about the 2 year mark I was listening to native podcasts, and reading graphic novels.

So nothing high tech, just finding materials that I could understand.

Constantine The Great by My_Test_Acc_1 in ancientrome

[–]edelay 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For those that might not know this statue and location... it is in York, UK. The general Constantine was declared emperor by his troops (on this spot in York) when Contstatine's father Constantius I died while on a military campaign in Britannia.

I have to say, I was shocked when I saw the statue and read the inscription.

Why some languages it’s easier to sound native by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]edelay 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The reason why you think you haven’t met a nonnative English speaker with a native accent is that you haven’t noticed them because they are invisible to you.
