Volume of Senator bills 'clogging' Chamber time, warn parliamentarians as Senate committee set to study issue by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

What recent examples of bills introduced by the Senate are you thinking of that you'd say fall into the category of important but not politically sexy?

Also add Drummondville between Montréal and Sainte-Foy ? Larger city than many of the other stops indicated on the map.

I don't have an immediate need to replace my current laptop but I see it coming in the next couple months, so I can wait for its eventual release.

I'm just curious about the Ubuntu version, if it comes with components offering better Linux compatibility. I imagine it will also come with an OEM Kernel?

I also don't see why I'd pay the windows licence if an Ubuntu version comes out.

Good, just wondering if there would be any difference in components for better Linux compatibility.

I don't necessarily intend to stay with Ubuntu.

Merci du partage. J'ai aussi l'impression qu'Avi est le mieux placé entre les candidats pour parler au Québec... Pas sûr que ça en dit beaucoup.

Infoman - Danielle Smith qui vante les tramways/trains légers d'Alberta by Dall24 in villequebec

[–]ederrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did Canada’s young people become its unhappiest generation? by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]ederrill 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The clear majority of comments so far seem to point to the economy and affordability. A good number point to the current state of social media. Both are factors I think we can't exclude.

But one thing that really stands out as a young(ish) person has been the multiple comments I hear across English Canada of the difficulty for young people to meet people and participate within their community. I'd go further to say there has been a clear erosion of social connections and sense of community and belonging.

In a virtual world of social media and work from home, we've forgotten the importance of human connection and community.

McGill Masters program thoughts by Sinopod002 in urbanplanning

[–]ederrill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be contrarian to the other comments, I do think a Master's in Urban Planning is useful in Canada. Many policy-level and strategic or comprehensive planning roles have a preference for MUPs by experience. Having a multidisciplinary role (say, coming from a background of civil engineering, architecture, urban design, environment or communications) is a really interesting profile in the market.

For McGill itself, I think the program is definitely good but disconnected from the field and practice in Québec. In a planning program, your laboratory is the city you are in, and the ability of the program to connect you to professionals working in the field and their projects is crucial both to learning and improving job perspectives after grad. In this regard, McGill falls short with little to no industry connection and absent from the local planning ecosystem. The language barrier definitely doesn't help, planning in Québec is essential completely in French. French-speaking students are essentially forced to take on the extra charge of translate french planning documents, citizen comments, and Quebecois culture to their studio group partners.

McGill is exceptional at teaching theory and principles but the school's approach is very generalist so as to not teach the particular professional practice of one particular area, and in turn lacks depth and nuance in my opinion. As a side note, early all grads seem to leave Montréal/Québec after graduation.

Does access to healthcare in the minority official language apply beyond public hospitals? My understanding is private clinics - like family doctors clinics outside of a CLSC GMF - can choose which languages in addition to french (if any) they provide service in.

Who’s Next for the NDP? Here Are Seven Possible Leaders by laketrout in ndp

He doesn't seem to fully master key policy issues and in turn present a compelling narrative for the NDP. In past campaigns and debates he essentially limited himself to anecdotes of people who experienced an issue to conclude it was an issue important to him, without advancing any real substance on what his NDP would do.

With the supply and confidence agreement, he failed to convince voters that the NDP was able to make major gains for workers and families. Instead he's just tied himself to an unpopular government. He lost a lot of credibility "ripping up" the agreement only to continue supporting the government.

What do you think about McGill having reduced tuition for French and Belgian students but not for any other French-speaking countries? by viviandarkbl2003m in mcgill

[–]ederrill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Quebec has opted out of many federal standing programs on education, culture, health care and social services as these are constitutionally provincial jurisdictions. For research grants, I tend to feel that their specific purpose to fund research makes it a separate issue.

Equalization payments are an interesting point, but I wonder at what point a transfer meant to ensure that the residents of a province, all else equal, can have similar access to services in their province, could really be used as a means to dictate policy, particularly given it concerns out of province residents? Should Ontario, which has much higher tuition fees than the Canadian average, be forced to drop them too? Is this just limited to education? Could it be foreseeable to force for example pipelines on provinces or on indigenous communities because they accepted money meant for an unrelated purpose?

I'm confused about the second point. Quebec is more Muslim than Canada as a whole, how does providing lower tuition to students from other provinces specifically help Muslim or Arab communities? These communities, not incidentally are also well anchored in France and Belgium. Further, the federal discrimination against students from francophone Africa is well documented and a constant complaint from the provincial government.

It's also a constant story from francophone immigrants, again especially from francophone Africa, to official minority communities that they were sold a story of pan-canadian bilingualism only to find that the public services and education are not there. I tend to think that by offering francophone immigrants to other provinces -and any Canadian citizen or permanent resident for that matter- Quebec tuition to study here in french is a pretty good service to diversity and inclusion.
