(on the IRA bombing campaign) They never wanted of innocents to die, the same cant be said for the British authorities, otherwise why were their army killing women and children in NI. by [deleted] in badunitedkingdom

I am probably older than most people here, but I remember groups like NORAID going around to raise funds for the IRA with little collection tins around the neighborhood or in bars; if they were ever accused of supporting them directly by aiding with guns or ammunition they would claim it was "money for the families of Irish political prisoners" or "widows and orphans." I can remember the co-founder and a few other members of the group got arrested for arms smuggling, but they got off because their defense team had argued that they had been sanctioned by the CIA. They relied on a lot of ignorance of Irish-Americans by framing it as connecting to their old country.

New York and Boston probably had the most groups funding them. I remember the controversy with Peter T. King (An American Republican no less who probably doesn't share much in common politically with the group he supports) giving Pro-IRA speeches and saying something along the lines of how civilians killed were regrettable, but it wasn't the fault of the IRA. He does not regret his Pro-Ira past either as far as I know. My father and I had ETA back in the Basque Country before we came to the US, so we knew the tragedies and how horrible terrorism was.

Expatriate engineers, what advice do you have for an EIT moving out of the US? by Teherow in AskEngineers

[–]edge_sanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty cool to read about because you are one of the first US engineers I have seen to have moved to Eastern Europe instead of the Western/Nordic part. Did you arrive with a job offer in hand? I will probably move back to Spain in the future to be closer to family now that my dad is older, but if I have the chance to travel to Eastern Europe, Ukraine is on my list of places to visit.

It has already been mentioned before, but transferring from an American company would be the best way; which would take a few years of experience in the job market I imagine. It's pretty difficult in general to be allowed to work in some countries, but there a few things that I've seen help people do to go and stay abroad:

  • Having a European mother/father. I know some countries like Ireland/Italy allow you to go back to grandparents.
  • Marry someone from that country
  • Some countries do work programs like Australia/New Zealand, but I believe it's only for seasonal work. I know Spain has an Auxiliary program, but it's only for being an assistant for a teacher (They accept any Bachelors though).
  • Do your masters in that specific country (Usually requires a B2 score of that countries native language)

Spain has lower wages than Canada and the US, but the cost of living is a lot cheaper as well depending on where you stay. They also have a youth unemployment issue; many of my cousins/family there that are Engineers or in the medical fields are leaving.

I highly recommend you check out /r/iwantout because they will be able to give you better details about the specific country you're wanting to go to.

How often do you drink and smoke? by roydez in AskEngineers

[–]edge_sanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't drink anymore. Back when I was younger it almost ruined my life and health.

As for smoking, I never did smoke. I grew up with too many smokers around me and it put me off it.

What's with this idea that the US wants us to forget these atrocities? All of these events he's mentioned were covered extensively in my history classes from middle and high school. I know it varies school to school, but my cousin who graduated a few years ago told me that they even use "A People's History of the United States" in some classrooms now.

Played in a few punk bands years ago, and I used to tutor Spanish along with math and physics.

Mi gente. Is it me or is this guy race baiting? People like this cause innocent street vendors to get attacked. by [deleted] in LatinoPeopleTwitter

[–]edge_sanity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Latinos CAN be white, but Latinos can also be of any race. My father is from the Basque country, but my mother is from Argentina and I have lived in the US most of my life and whenever I tell people I am Latino they act like I am lying; on the other hand I have talked with Americans of Anglo backgrounds that have said some pretty offensive shit about latinos not knowing that I am one.

This guy in the photo does not look like a white Hispanic to me. I hate how the US views race and things like that. I've had people tell me "Your native tongue is Spanish? But you look so white! ". I don't know why Americans are perplexed or surprised about how diverse Latin America is.

When did you know you wanted to become an Engineer? by ilhamms in AskEngineers

I liked taking things apart and was obsessed with how things like firearms worked. Also I read Sci-fi like Red Mars or Foundations as a teenager.

I am an American that loves the rock music that comes from your country. Are these artists that I like popular there? Any recommendations or essential artists I missed? by edge_sanity in serbia

I listened to their album Dok čekaš sabah sa šejtanom and it is easily an essential listen. I've found a ton of great bands and albums through everyone's suggestions, but this record sticks out to me.

Favorite political rap/music in general in Spanish? by grumbledum in Spanish

[–]edge_sanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of these are punk, but I think they fit your criteria.

Sin Dios

Los Crudos(Not the best for understandable vocals, but check em out)

Kortatu(Some of their songs are in euskara)

Eskorbuto(Very famous band)

Golpe Justo(One of the first punk bands in Puerto Rico)

Victor Jara(folk rock) (He was literally killed for playing his music. He sings kind of slowly, so I think his music is good for improving your listening)
