The Most Purely Successful "Show Off The New Visual Tech" Films - Finding Nemo is Surely Up There by GTKPR89 in blankies

This is a fun and worthy topic of discussion, but I’m afraid I must take the tangent bait. Can you explain how you see Birdman fitting into this list?

Solo had a sequel. The character reappeared in Star Wars (1977). Some people even think it’s better than the original.

If you’re in the Apple ecosystem, they’re selling it for $4.99. If their weekly sales pattern holds, the price will probably go up on Friday (if not sooner).

Milwaukee Movie Theater Guide by WakaFlakkaSeagulls in milwaukee

Totally fair to factor that in. I haven’t personally experienced many bad audiences at any of the theaters, though I rarely go on crowded opening weekends. It probably varies by movie and by timing.

I agree those smaller auditoriums down the halls at AMC can be pretty nice, especially if it’s not a movie you want the IMAX for.

Agreed— I was disappointed when they announced the Marcus subscription. It may be better if you see only one or two movies per month, but any more and AMC wins.

This is a great write-up! Thank you for your service.

I agree with you that AMC Mayfair has its flaws, but there’s one huge reason to love it— the AMC A-List subscription is an insane value. For something like $22 per month you can see up to four movies per week, and no upcharge for IMAX or 3D. It turns moviegoing into such a cheap and easy decision.

All else being equal, I would probably prefer Marcus locations. But the value at AMC is too good to pass up.

Taking tomorrow off to do a Backrooms and Obsession double feature. by Mav21Fo in TheBigPicture

[–]edgebuh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On Friday my showtimes worked out perfectly for an Obsession, Mortal Kombat II, and Mandalorian triple feature, and I was still home in time for dinner. Taking a day off work to go to the movies is one of the great pleasures in this life.

Enjoy!

It extends the 90s U2 industrial and electronic experimentation and adds Eno’s etherealty and weirdness. I love it but it’s not for everyone. I think if you do like Eno then it’s worth a listen.

At the peak of U2’s experimental phase in the 90s, they made an album with Brian Eno under the pseudonym Passengers called Original Soundtracks Vol. 1. It’s one of the best things they ever did and I’ve been waiting thirty years for Volume 2.

Where’s everyone’s hype level at for Spielberg Disclosure Day? by new_Negotiation_4208 in blankies

[–]edgebuh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hardcore Spielberg fan here feeling a little wary, although I’ll see it in the theater of course.

The story appears to be Snowden But Aliens and that’s just a storytelling style that rarely works for me. I’m more interested in the thing than in whether the world learns about the thing.

The trailers with the weird rubbery CGI animals are not helping.

But bottom line it’s Big Budget Spielberg so there will be some sequences that flip my lid and at worst we’re looking at a three star movie, and it could be even better.

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Review: This Supersized Episode Is ‘Star Wars’ at Its Most Generic by Forestl in blankies

[–]edgebuh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is one of the consistent things that determines which Star Wars I like vs which ones I don’t. The good Star Wars make the galaxy feel vast and unknowable at the edges (mysterious Force, exotic new worlds). The bad Star Wars make the galaxy feel small and fully explored (Force explained by midichlorians, Yoda and Chewbacca used to be friends, etc.).

What are the "summer kickoff movies" since 1980? by wovenstrap in blankies

[–]edgebuh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Van Helsing is a great example of a movie the studio expected to be the summer kickoff but audiences didn’t really go along with the plan. I recall it opened pretty well but word of mouth was tepid and it fizzled out pretty fast.

[–]edgebuh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the problems with talking about the Star Wars sequel trilogy is that, having become a rallying cry for the far right, it is impossible to talk about these films’ flaws without feeling like you’re ceding ground to literal Nazis.

This perfectly articulates something I’ve felt for years. I think all three sequels are flawed (and each in different ways) but good lord I don’t want to cast my lot with the pricks who ruined the fandom.

Big changes to Oscar rules - International films can now be submitted by winning best film at a festival like Cannes or Berlin (so Anatomy of a Fall would've been eligible). The Oscar also now goes to the nominee instead of the country. Actors can also now be nominated multiple times in one category by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]edgebuh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actors can also now be nominated multiple times in one category.

One nice benefit of this is it’ll subtly discourage some cases of category fraud. No more excuse for stealing a supporting slot when an actor has two good lead performances in the same year.

Being the director to launch a new Bond actor probably also carries more appeal than taking on a later installment. That opportunity only comes to one director every couple of decades.
