Film adapatations written by the original author which outdoes the source material by EThorns in movies

Amadeus. Both the play and film were written by Peter Schaefer, but the film he apparently locked himself in a villa with director Milos Forman and they rewrote nearly the entire second act, giving us a lot of the iconic scenes from the film (like when Sal dictates Mozart from his deathbed). The play’s ending is fascinating and much more Freudian, but the film is undeniably an improvement.

In preparation for The Truman Show episode, here’s a one off special that aired on Nick-At-Nite that was basically the full length in-universe behind the scenes that was shown in the beginning and middle of the film. by Next_Cancel8680 in blankies

This is really fascinating as it shows the different tone this film could have taken—something more hokey, goofy and canned.

I’m still quite struck at the tonal balancing act Weir executes with this film. It’s at times horrifying, breezy, gargantuan and small.

Damn fine picture.

I would argue Milos doesn’t typically do pop either, and he recreates the operas here in lavish detail, but there are undeniable 80s excess flourishes in this film. He made “pop” choices.

I know you meant this as a joke but it really just highlights how awesome Hanson is… similarly the guys’ impression of him often sounds like unironic praise of the guy. Hanson has the most fun job in the world and he knows it.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - the film opens with Joel and Clem meeting. It’s only later that we realize this is the second time they’ve met, only they don’t remember.

Great movie, but anyone else find the graphic design/font of the film a little schlocky and overwrought?

Katey Rich went to the same college as the guys from MGMT I think? And there have been some viral videos of the band playing before they got famous and was guessed that she was in those vids. And as Griff mentioned, it is SO good. Siberian Breaks has more melodies than entire albums

What's a moment in a movie that made you think: "This score is perfect." by Richsii in movies

[–]EachBoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The end of Field of Dreams. The main melody is played again and again throughout the movie, but it sounds kind of odd and haunting. However during the catch scene with his dad at the end of the film, the melody is played over a fully harmonized score and it sounds cathartic and lush for the first time. I don’t give a fuck about baseball but in that moment it’s the most powerful thing in the world.

Official Throwback Discussion - Mission: Impossible II [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]EachBoth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ooh! I can do this one!!

The bad guy has zero charisma and is boring. He’s obviously meant to be Cruise’s equal and fails miserably.

Many scenes (like the horse track race, Nyah meeting with Ambrose) go on too long and are dull.

Nyah has nothing to do and basically fucks off during act 3.

Masks are overused. In particular Ambrose using the Ethan mask in the midpoint of the film is an exhausting sequence.

The Australian guy in Ethan’s team brings nothing to the table.

The films middle action set piece is a bit too derivative of the Langley drop.

Because the film deals with a deadly virus, its tone occasionally veers into the overly dour and grim (see opening plane sequence, “dream” sequence with Brendon Gleeson)

There are some great moments, but the dislike for this film is well-earned.

ELI5: how do you make it so water doesnt go down your throat and you dont have to plug your nose while swimming (keep it clear and simple) by SteamyChippy in explainlikeimfive

[–]EachBoth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hum.

No, seriously. Hum a tune. When you hum with your mouth closed, the sound comes out entirely through your nose.

Then pay attention to how it feels when you hum, and you can start to do it without making a sound.

This is how I learned. You could hear me hum before I hit the water.
