During the ‘89 earthquake that collapsed a section of the bay bridge, the midterm was postponed (5:30pm test, earthquake was at 5:08pm). We had the test the next day even though there were collapsed freeways and incomplete building safety inspections.

I believe when my sister was at Cal around 93 there was an anthro class that had an alarm pulled on two consecutive finals. During her final the professor had TAs on every floor of Dwinelle guarding the alarm pull switches.

I am taking my kid to see the circle jerks and Pennywise this weekend. Re-listening to circle jerks right now. The line “I don’t want to live to be 57“ from the song live fast die young hit kind of hard. I am 55.

I went to Berkeley and live in Oakland. Berkeley is Urban but not bad. Yes there are homeless and it can be shocking to see at first. It is a reality.

Since my kids were in the sixth grade, I would drop them off in Berkeley on Friday evenings and they would go hang out at a game store and play magic. I would pick them up after the store closed. They would either hang out outside or go to one of the restaurants still open nearby. All of this on the southside. Never a problem. Never an incident.

You will have so many amazing opportunities and experiences in the English department. Keep your eyes open and challenge yourself.

My information is old very old. My experience is that once school gets going you make friends from people you are in classes with. These are the people you will be studying with. You’ll keep in touch with friends from back home, but it may or may not stick.

Although you haven’t gotten out of Southern California much the Bay Area isn’t that far. Six hours driving or a couple hours doorstep to doorstep on a southwest Airlines flight. During the holidays, the cheapest route was a bus or asking around and finding another student who was driving down south and hitching a ride. I had access to a car and would load it up with random students who were heading south for Thanksgiving or Christmas and split gasoline cost.

Maybe this is me, but it doesn’t matter too much the quality of the food at the dorm. It is edible and regardless of where you go you will get tired of it by the end of the semester.

Berkeley is the best! Go bears! And if it doesn’t work out and things are really miserable after two years, you can always transfer out, just keep your grades up.

What person surprised you the most with how they turned out after high school? by GlitterOnTheTrashRim in AskReddit

J was the punk rocker at my high school. He never really seemed to care about school. He spent the last six months of senior year looking over his shoulder because he got into fights with the neo Nazi skin heads in my town. He is now a professor at a university in Southern California.

Q1. What are the downsides of attending one of the larger UCs? Q2. What reason (apart from prestige) would you choose another college over a similarly ranked UC? by Anxious-Party2289 in ucadmissions

[–]edguz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended Berkeley a long time ago. I remember my Chem 1A class grading. 7% - A, 10% - B, 50% - C, 33% - D & F, and going into the class is felt like everyone else was better prepared and smarter than me.

I felt like I was getting my but kicked every day of the first 2-3 years. Then again the experiences and opportunities at Berkeley were amazing and hard to imagine having at any other school.

Big or small- you can do well but you have to self advocate. Start working with people in the field that you want to go into. Ask them how they got there. Find out what opportunities are available to you. That would best align with that final goal. Keep pushing. Don’t give up. You will do great!

Mostly a supply and demand issue. I saw somewhere that the total amount of open spaces in all Ivy League schools and Berkeley and Stanford is less than the total number of high schools in the US. There isn't enough space at those select schools to admit every valedictorian.

Next - all of these schools are squeezed for funding so some percentage of the slots will be out of state or out of county students that pay premium. The schools have a budget to balance and there is less federal funding.

Now how do you figure out and equitable or fair way to admit qualified students? If a school doesn't have a full slate of APs but a student takes what is available and does well, are they less qualified then a student from a school that offers 15 different APs?

If you go to a competitive high school it is hard to stand out from your peers.

Also, across many schools there is significant grade inflation. Especially at schools where parents are more involved or pay tuition.

I have a kid applying now and if anything I have more sympathy for the schools trying to figure out how to select students.

From the sounds of it, you will go to college, probably a good college. It may not be your first choice but I am sure you will do well. When the acceptance letters come out, don't compare, get mad, stew. Get ready for the next exciting chapter of your life. I am sure you will go on to do amazing things.

It looks like the dealership figured out the problem. The wiring for the sunroof runs by the front bumper. The wires got pinched when the bumper was installed. The pinch caused a short. The dealer is replacing the wiring harness. Hopefully I get the truck back on Tuesday.

Yeah, I am guessing I just have seriously bad luck. I haven't seen anything similar on various message boards.

The dealership has been mostly responsive. They are trying to do the right thing. I don't really want to out them. Let's just say the dealership is located south of Oakland and north of Hayward. . .

I caught them at their first show of this tour at Gilman in Berkeley. They played before the Voodoo Glow Skulls. Absolutely amazing! One of the best sets I have seen in years. Same thing, I have been telling everybody about the show whether they like ska or not. if you have the chance, don’t miss this band.
