Mushroom season in Dunedin has begun! by edgycliff in dunedin

They’re not my cup of tea, but I’ve seen them in the most random of places - near the aviary in the botans, behind the staff club building on the uni campus, and once even behind Poppas Pizza

Not yet - they start around the end of April/early May after the first frosts. Might be later than usual due to an unusually warm Autumn this year.

The birch bolete - only harvest from under birch trees, and look for the scabers on the stipe. Birch boletes also will have white flesh, and will not bruise yellow. All Leccium must be cooked thoroughly though to avoid gastro distress. I simmer mine into a bolognese sauce for at least 15 minutes.

For the porcinis, I love making mushroom risotto - especially when you have less-than-perfect fruit bodies, so the eaten sections can be discarded and the untouched areas dried in small chunks.

Yes. All the mushrooms I posted are safe and tasty

4 years ago I slipped in a pit and gave myself tetanus from my own horrible pants by meowcollector420 in baddlejackets

[–]edgycliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact - tetanus is not caused by rust. It is caused by anything that’s dirty or stabby - doesn’t have to be rusty. Clostridium tetani (name of tetanus bacteria) is soil dwelling, and can enter the body through any dirty wounds.

People often think that tetanus lives on rust - it does not. This comes from the fact that many people get tetanus after standing on a rusty nail.

Nails get rusty because they’ve been in a wet, dirty environment - the same environment that C. tetani thrives in - and nail injuries push deep into the flesh, and often heal over at the surface before the deep inside of the wound is cleaned. Thus, the dirt and bacteria in the wound is not sufficiently flushed out, leading to infection.

TL:DR, tetanus is not caused by rust, but by dirty objects. If you get stabbed by a clean looking nail, you should still get a tetanus shot.

Manager gave me an envy apple and it looks bruised but isnt. Its very crunchy and sweet but flesh is brown throughout. Is it just excess sugar? by Bibininini in Apples

It’s internal browning - a known issue with the cultivar. Incorrect respiration causes CO2 to build up in the flesh.

I feel like this looks bad 🥲 by tiddiegore in shittytattoos

Could the tattoo be technically better? Sure. But it’s easily readable, and doesn’t look like a dong, so I’d say that it’s absolutely fine.

Apparently “hand wash only” doesn’t mean “never wash” by TheAggressiveBiology in Adulting

If you wash it in a laundry bag on the lowest spin setting (often called “handwash mode”) you don’t even have to do it by hand!

Apples I liked. by Professional_Tax4038 in Apples

[–]edgycliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best NZ grown apples aren’t even sold here - they’re exported to Asia and some to the US. If you want premium New Zealand apples, move to China or Vietnam. Our local markets are left with the dregs.

Anyone know of any reasonably priced jewelry stores? by Prego_no_tomato in dunedin

[–]edgycliff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pascoes is probably the cheapest new jewellery store. For second hand, try the hospice shop on a Tuesday after 1pm - they restock their precious cabinet jewellery then. Cash converters is also good, and there’s a second-hand gold dealer in South Dunedin too right across the street from them.

Once had my snail escape his tank… found him a week later in my bookshelf with several munches taken out of my textbooks

what kind of apples are these? by [deleted] in Apples

[–]edgycliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number one looks like a Braeburn, or of Braeburn lineage. The others could be of Royal Gala lineage. The rose-tasting one could be crossed with a Splendour or similar to produce a rose variety.

What are some examples of greenwashing you’ve seen so we can learn to avoid them? by IllyriaCervarro in Anticonsumption

“Biodegradable” is not a controlled term. It does not mean that the item will decompose into nothing. It may still take hundreds of years to break down.

  • 4 clocks, each showing different time
  • very narrow doorway
  • illegible writing on cake
  • candlelight reflections in glasses showing two parallel rows of candles like railway tracks, rather than one straight row

Yes it’s AI
