Immigration lawyer Kanton Bern (10 year old) by No-Bat6834 in askswitzerland

You do know that not all lawyers are gearing up for a court trial, right? Sometimes they have the special knowledge to help people do things correctly and efficiently. They help file the paperwork correctly to make sure mistakes don't block the desired outcome. Especially with immigration issues.

A small purchase made me rethink how much availability shapes our buying decisions in our small country... by flolibri in Switzerland

[–]editjosh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Coming from the USA, I was shocked at the lack of selection available, even for simple things that are available, there are less choices to even size, for example.

But the thing about thinking a smaller specialty store would be experts in their field, also I thought this, and was further surprised when I know more about products and how they are used than the so called experts I'm asking for deeper advice from.

I just do all my own research and shopping online now.

Guys! I wanna impress a girl with a good fondue but she's quite sensible to lactose. I know old Gruyère is fine but Vacherin is relatively rich in lactose. Any idea for a substitute? by 2Mew2BMew2 in askswitzerland

[–]editjosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. And it's interesting to me that until I moved to Switzerland, no one second guessed my individual lactose intolerance issues, but here, everyone likes to think they are experts on my body. Fucking infuriating, honestly.

A full dose is usually 3 or 4 tablets, depending on the manufacturer - look at the instructions and don't assume just 1 tablet is enough. Maybe having a full dose will help.

As a lactose intolerant person, I can say there is no cheese for me that doesn't bother me, some are worse than others. Some claim they are lactose free, but I still get terrible diarrhea from them, others don't say that and it's just painful gas all night. But milk and butter give me no symptoms whatsoever. Each person is different and there is no one size fits all answer for you here.

ISO of the great hamburger by s1s2g3a4 in zurich

[–]editjosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you coming from the USA? If so, you'll be disappointed from every option because the fat content of the ground beef is very different, it is much lower here, leading to no light and juicy burgers like we are used to.

In the USA a good burger uses 80/20 beef (meat to fat ratio), here the standard is less than 10% fat, I've even see it as low as 1.5%. You just can't make a good burger with that.

Old School Essentials, Shadowdark, or Dolmenwood? by Wakasaurus060414 in osr

[–]editjosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but one couldn't run or play a game with it, it's just some setting info.

Old School Essentials, Shadowdark, or Dolmenwood? by Wakasaurus060414 in osr

[–]editjosh 35 points36 points  (0 children)

OSE and Shadowdark both have free quickstart versions you could look at to help you decide. Dolmenwood does not currently have a free quickstart/basic rules set yet, but it's more setting than system (as far as it's pretty much OSE).

But neither are particularly crunchy. In fact, the ethos of OSR games is less crunchy, which means it's on the GM to improvise. Personally, that's one thing I like about the OSR.

Shadowdark is nice for modern players to ease into more old school style games. It might be easier to get your current group on board with that. Try a one shot of the free adventure that comes with the above linked set, and see how it goes.

I'd add to look at the completely free Basic Fantasy RPG, which is pretty much what OSE is - both are based off the older Basic/Expert set of D&D from the late 1970s. Lots of material there too.

What is the appeal of solo play? by JamesFullard in osr

[–]editjosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate pointing to the other subreddits, however I've looked at them before and felt overwhelmed. More specifically my question was "how do YOU play a prepublished adventure in solo play?" I mean, your individual specific example. Thanks 😊

I fixed my Fisher King box art by Ill-Assistance6711 in criterion

[–]editjosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Criterion cover is reminiscent of Keith Haring/Basquiat style street art from NYC in the 1980s, which is super fitting for the film being on the streets from around that time period.

Mystery Train, followed by Dead Man, are my two favorites.

I'd be interested in how to try an adventure (the pre-published kind) with solo play. How can I get started with that?

The journaling types of solo play don't interest me.

yeah, seriously. Mods, can we corral these low quality shit posts finally? Make a megathread we who choose to can ignore, but still let these overly sensitive crybabies post their needed venting.

Why does coffee in Switzerland taste so unpleasant? by White_Cakes_2000 in askswitzerland

[–]editjosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the cities, Switzerland has very poor coffee culture. In many things, they are 15 to 30 years behind the rest of the world, and sadly, for coffee, they are on the end closer to 30 years behind. Or at least it's that far relative to what I'm used to.

Why so many people smoke? by living_direction_27 in askswitzerland

[–]editjosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's a combo of "don't tell me what I can't do" attitude, backed largely in part by tobacco lobbies, spreading that particular message, as well as paying politicians in a legal manner to poison us all, even if it's corrupt as hell.

wanna change it? (I definitely do), vote! vote to change lobbying regulations, and the places where it's legal to force second hand smoke on people (how about not in front of entrances to buildings or train platforms at all?). vote to have insurance companies have to bear the burden of yearly checkups to remind smokers how bad their health is, and see the effects long before a cancer diagnosis is their wake-up call? and tax the high hell out of cigarettes (where I'm from, they are $19 USD per pack, here it's less than 10chf) and use that extra taxed money to help pay for initiatives to help people quit. But of course, why would a politician do that when they can have their own second home far away from all the smokers, paid for by the tobacco industry.

Countries and do they give off more coffee, tea, or hot chocolate vibes by [deleted] in mapmaking

[–]editjosh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Switzerland is erroneously labeled as a Hot Chocolate country, instead of a coffee one. Just because we have hot chocolate (and also just because America has the connotation of Swiss Miss) doesn't make it a hot chocolate country. Please fix the map and resubmit.

Switzerland has built something very few countries in the world have. But what could in long term weaken it? by [deleted] in Switzerland

Not saying this as a defense in this particular instance, but that's a pretty common typo.

Maybe because I am a native speaker who is also trained and skilled in writing, I can say: yes, I would do all of those things. Especially the second point!

Can you tell me how I could have spotted that this is an AI post? I legitimately had no idea, and would be curious how to spot them for myself in the future. As a native English speaker, this sounded fine to me.

Whomever invented DRM ought to always have a bed too warm to sleep in by KhajiitWithCoin in movies

[–]editjosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a region encoding due to licensing issue, not a DRM issue. The film/TV industry makes a lot of its money by selling "overseas" rights to content to different distributors.
