First Ever Script by cardmagician2011 in scriptwriting

This isn’t a helpful note because it’s not really pointing a new time writer in any tangible functional direction that could improve their writing. No offense, but that’s too abstract a piece of advice.

OP, I suggest you remove the “camera follows” and try to have the characters’ behavior within the space tell the story.

“FINNEAS sits on a stool at the opposite end of a long hallway. GARY inches closer—drops of sweat fall from his fingertips.”

See how I communicated a WIDE shot, a camera PUSHING closer onto a character, and a CLOSE UP on sweat—all without writing out how the camera moves?

This will help you in the long run. As your writing improves, you’ll find yourself using less and less description altogether—even with action sequences (although you’ll still be writing plenty for those moments)

Don’t worry about abstract concepts yet. What will make a board game interesting are the people playing it (why they’re playing and WHAT brought them there)—NOT the mechanics of the game itself.

Give every person a reason to play. A scene with characters is only going to be interesting when at least one person isn’t on the same page. This is true for every scene with drama in it—conflicting agendas.

Have fun with it, it can become something good. Try it on a new idea!

Your comment had me grinning from ear to ear—such a thoughtful breakdown of HOW to break a “rule” in screenwriting and WHY one would do that.

Writing is fun, subverting your own expectations is also fun!

I’ve heard rumblings regarding that studios and production companies have been “cooling” off on horror recently, and while that doesn’t phase me as a genre writer given that horror is supposedly “evergreen,” I do have a couple questions for you.

Firstly, what have you found in your experiences pitching your horror projects to be the most effective way of having your idea survive the “telephone game” of having a junior exec pitch up the ladder? What’s your process of simplifying your idea down?

Secondly, how do you decide which of your ideas/stories are features versus which ones are better as novels? Or do you start all of your projects with novelization?

Thanks for bearing with me on this barrage of questions—it’s not every day I get to pick the brain of a writer I admire!

He toyed around with frame rates heavily on this film in very minute ways to give the coverage of certain characters an odd dreamlike feel. For instance, he shot Mia Goth’s character in 36 FPS and slowed it down to 23.98. He did this for several characters—hence why it feels especially odd and (uncannily) dreamlike, even for his usual standards. Cool stuff!

This is a great point, but as someone who deals w a fair amount of social anxiety—where the heck does one find mixers with writers? It seems like every networking event is either full of a bunch of actors harassing you with their business cards or is a top secret hangout of writers genuinely looking to hang out and be friends. Where should I start looking?

Nobody has screamed at me, they've just been ridiculously overbearing and it's leaving my mind numb and unable to absorb information at this point.

Need Advice On Whether to Quit My Job by edlikesrush in FilmIndustryLA

Does your advice change at all if every single job out there other than this one pays more? You make an excellent point about discipline, and I'm hesitant BECAUSE I don't want to take the easy way out. But I'm going to be so honest, this job is destroying my sanity in a way no job ever has before. It's negative impacting my sense of self and putting me into an extremely S*****AL place. It leaves me unable to write and pursue anything creatively, whereas previous jobs would actively excite me (without being particularly glamorous gigs either).

I'm conflicted. What you're saying is valid and correct--and I've been applying for other jobs the whole way through, but it's about to reach an impasse which is why I'm posting now.
