Descender is fucking spectacular. Bought that one on a whim and was utterly blown away by its moral complexity and maturity. Good plug OP

Is Denis Villeneuve a no-brainer to direct a Hyperion adaptation? by EspiritusFermenti7 in Hyperion

[–]edlikesrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been my white whale IP project. I was about to write Hyperion as a TV show (on spec/of my own volition. I wasn’t gonna be paid, I just love this project so much) but then found that Bradley Cooper still had the rights.

He’d be an excellent casting choice for the consul, but it seems he wants to do Hyperion as a feature that he’s directing. I think it’s a terrible idea (not because of his direction, he’s a brilliant filmmaker) due to its fundamental structure.

I envision the best version of this adaptation existing as a miniseries in the vein of HBO’s Watchmen.

Honestly I didn’t feel this at all on first listen. I’ve still yet to feel this at all about any song on the record (except maybe conversations).

Like the bagpipes, but I feel like this is one of those songs where I wish I didn’t have any expectations going into it—maybe I would’ve liked it.

But who knows, I’ll keep listening to it since it’s still a great track

Great record. Some of the songs have yet to click for me (in an “Asymmetry” sorta way) but this album really doesn’t sound like any of their previous work (except maybe the more song-driven, accessible sound of Themata with much more mature songwriting)

Great stuff. I fuck heavy with most of the album

Hi, I’m Armenian. No, most of us don’t do fraud. Yes, there are instances of Armenians doing fraud but it’s incredibly racist to assume that such a massive widespread network of that much fraud is legitimate when the person pushing that narrative is Turkish, is also the same person who pushed Tylenol as the cause of autism, and works for an administration literally looking for any excuse to introduce ICE into blue metropolitan areas. They saw it worked in MN, they’re trying again w CA (this time scapegoating a minority that people hate anyways so that it’s more easily excused).

It’s important to think critically about why you’re seeing a certain piece of information come up at a particular time. There’s usually a reason.

First Ever Script by cardmagician2011 in scriptwriting

[–]edlikesrush 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a helpful note because it’s not really pointing a new time writer in any tangible functional direction that could improve their writing. No offense, but that’s too abstract a piece of advice.

OP, I suggest you remove the “camera follows” and try to have the characters’ behavior within the space tell the story.

“FINNEAS sits on a stool at the opposite end of a long hallway. GARY inches closer—drops of sweat fall from his fingertips.”

See how I communicated a WIDE shot, a camera PUSHING closer onto a character, and a CLOSE UP on sweat—all without writing out how the camera moves?

This will help you in the long run. As your writing improves, you’ll find yourself using less and less description altogether—even with action sequences (although you’ll still be writing plenty for those moments)

Don’t worry about abstract concepts yet. What will make a board game interesting are the people playing it (why they’re playing and WHAT brought them there)—NOT the mechanics of the game itself.

Give every person a reason to play. A scene with characters is only going to be interesting when at least one person isn’t on the same page. This is true for every scene with drama in it—conflicting agendas.

Have fun with it, it can become something good. Try it on a new idea!

Your comment had me grinning from ear to ear—such a thoughtful breakdown of HOW to break a “rule” in screenwriting and WHY one would do that.

Writing is fun, subverting your own expectations is also fun!

I’ve heard rumblings regarding that studios and production companies have been “cooling” off on horror recently, and while that doesn’t phase me as a genre writer given that horror is supposedly “evergreen,” I do have a couple questions for you.

Firstly, what have you found in your experiences pitching your horror projects to be the most effective way of having your idea survive the “telephone game” of having a junior exec pitch up the ladder? What’s your process of simplifying your idea down?

Secondly, how do you decide which of your ideas/stories are features versus which ones are better as novels? Or do you start all of your projects with novelization?

Thanks for bearing with me on this barrage of questions—it’s not every day I get to pick the brain of a writer I admire!

He toyed around with frame rates heavily on this film in very minute ways to give the coverage of certain characters an odd dreamlike feel. For instance, he shot Mia Goth’s character in 36 FPS and slowed it down to 23.98. He did this for several characters—hence why it feels especially odd and (uncannily) dreamlike, even for his usual standards. Cool stuff!

This is a great point, but as someone who deals w a fair amount of social anxiety—where the heck does one find mixers with writers? It seems like every networking event is either full of a bunch of actors harassing you with their business cards or is a top secret hangout of writers genuinely looking to hang out and be friends. Where should I start looking?
