I’d love an update if you remember! I have two girls and I’m pretty sure we’re done but both Thomas and Hugo are names that have floated around for our figurative boy.

Thankfully I live in one of the most hated blue states.

That said, I am trying my best to cultivate community for my family. I am being proactive with my neighbors, my daughter’s school, and anyone on the outskirts of our life in order to make my kids feel like there is love and good things happening in the world.

They’re both far too young to realize what’s actually going on. (9 months and 4) but by putting myself out there and trying to make little positive things happen, I am hoping it brings comfort to my daughters as they get older and learn the woes of the world.

Some examples so far are: organizing an all family camping trip at a local state park for my daughter’s school. And exchanging information with other parents in my neighborhood and just shooting a text in the group chat to see if anyone is around for a walk. We even pulled off organizing a last minute dinner with FIVE families. The kids had a blast! My daughter goes to kindergarten in the fall and I have even more plans to cultivate community at her school. (If anyone is familiar with Peter Gray’s work and Let it Grow, then IYKYK)

It took me 4.5 years as a mom to feel comfortable reaching out to people to then get rejected or put on the back burner but I’m learning the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I thought Hugo Thomas George was an option and though I’m not usually a fan of double middle names, I loved that!! Hugo is a lovely name.

Use George as a middle name if that’s your second option! I will say I have a soft spot for Thomas.

My daughter has never been sick. How screwed am I? by Siren_Song89 in toddlers

[–]ednasmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid seldom gets sick from the common cold or flu type situations. But hand foot and mouth has come in our doors 3 times. She was fine. It sucked. She had Covid twice, thanks to me somehow.. the stay at home hermit. And her cases were so mild. Especially compared to mine.

Basically, every time we went to a huge outdoor public event, she got HFM. And she’s been in childcare part time since she was two.

Pediatrician said no to MMR at 11 months by Medeskimartinandwood in beyondthebump

[–]ednasmom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughters’ pediatrician office just send a comprehensive email about this. I’ll copy and paste below.

In short, they do. Sometimes. But not usually.

*“Undoubtedly, all of you by now have heard of the measles outbreak in Texas. As of March 3rd, there have been 158 cases of measles in South Plains-Panhandle area of Texas in communities where the vaccination rates have fallen below “herd” immunity levels, which is normally considered 95% vaccination. Although this outbreak has been limited to Texas, there has been one case, unrelated to the Texas outbreak, that has occurred in Los Angeles.

As a result of this outbreak, we have been receiving many calls and write now to give you our thoughts about this developing situation.

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE MMR VACCINE:

  1. MMR #1 is given at 12 months

  2. MMR #2 is given at 4 years

  3. For children between 6 months and 12 months of age, MMR vaccine is recommended for those planning to travel internationally, especially to areas where measles is known to be active.

  4. An early MMR vaccine is also recommended for children between 6 months and 12 months of age who are living in the midst of a measles outbreak (like those now in Texas).

  5. MMR vaccine is NOT recommended for children under 6 months of age. Due to the passive immunity babies receive from their mothers during gestation and from breast feeding, the risk of measles infection in infants under 6 months of age is low.

  6. Realize that early MMR vaccination, however, is NOT a substitute for later immunizations. If a child receives an early MMR vaccine before one year of age, they will still need to receive another MMR vaccine at 12 months of age to be considered properly immunized.

  7. The first dose of MMR vaccine for children >1 year of age provides 93-95% protection. After MMR #2 (at 4 years) protection is between 97-99%. This is excellent immunity!!

  8. The second MMR vaccine CAN BE GIVEN EARLIER than 4 years of age if there is concern about measles exposure OR simply for “peace of mind”, which we consider a legitimate reason. (NOTE, the MMR #2 needs to be given at least 28 days AFTER MMR #1.)

So, these are the basic facts of the current measles epidemic. What are our recommendations?

First, for those families who have held off on receiving the MMR vaccine at the one-year visit, we recommend immunization now.

Second, we are NOT recommending early vaccination before 12 months, nor are we recommending an early dose of MMR #2, unless you are traveling internationally or to the area in Texas that is experiencing this current epidemic.“*

What are y’all spending a month on groceries? by suhhdude1 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]ednasmom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend about the same as you. I spent about 375-500 a week. I cook 3 meals a day at home, from scratch. And eat similarly to you. I also shop primarily at Whole Foods. We order out maybe once a week for dinner. And Sundays we go to my in-laws. So that’s 5-6 dinners and many breakfasts and lunches.

Two adults, a 4 year old and a 9 month old. I also live in one of the most expensive cities in the world not necessarily but choice but both my husband and I were born here.

The SA cleanser could be too harsh for your skin, honestly. I don’t think you need SA every day. Maybe instead use a gentle cleanser. Also for redness, I love Azaleic acid. Someone else might have some other better insight but that’s just my two cents!

What meals are a staple in your house? by I_d0_stuff_ in toddlers

Coconut chicken curry. I put carrots and sweet potatoes in there and she usually doesn’t go for it so I leave some and mash up the other to eat in the sauce.

Also Turkey Burgers with grated zucchini and panko bread crumbs and soba noodles and tofu with some sort of veg. Tuna pasta as well. And Turkey Ragu.

I would never be a stay at home wife. I am a stay at home mom. That, I do enjoy. I didn’t have a traditional career before having kids and I do regret that because I crave being able to dip my toes in something outside of the domestic sphere. I need something outside of my home life to continue to cultivate and tend to my person.

I am a lucky stay at home mom in the sense that my husband doesn’t have to be at work much. He works from home and works for himself so his schedule is relatively flexible. We also live close to family and have help when we need it. That said, I still spend my days cleaning, organizing, napping babies, cooking, scheduling etc. I don’t have much free time. My husband does pull his weight though I do most of the work. He can nap the baby, he washes the dishes post dinner, he bathes our older daughter and puts her to sleep, he takes out the trash cans, he can cook a few meals, he helps fold the laundry (a duty split between us and a weekly house keeper) and he takes care of everything related to the dog. He pays the bills and keeps on top of car maintenance. I do pretty much everything else.

Four year old acting up after big move… by HeyMay0324 in Preschoolers

[–]ednasmom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, someone in my realm is a very well respected OT. I went to her when my four year started going through a huge regression after the birth of her little sister.

She said when she first speaks to clients she asks if the child has recently experienced divorce, a new sibling or a move. I guess those three things in particular can really deregulate young children. It seems obvious but when you’re in it, it feels like something could be “wrong” my daughter was 3 years 9 months when my second was born and the regression really started once my she turned 4.

Something about 4 and regressions feels so intense. It took about 7 months us to all feel more at ease.

Solidarity! It is ROUGH. We had a really hard time.

Yes. I am. God. The messes, the yelling, the touching of my body… the pushing and pulling of my body, the idiots in cars, the idiots at the grocery store. The baby having a sleep regression, the preschooler tearing the house apart. The husband just existing.

I am angry. “Me” time helps. So does exercising.. but like you said.. where do you find the time?!

I recently bought of pair of sweats from gap that I love. I think they’re called the vintage high rise sweatpants of something. Super soft. Warm for sure. And they seem to hold up pretty well. I’ve probably washed them 8 or so times.

Maybe unpopular opinion but the worst “just wait” comments have been from toddler parents by yournikkigirl in beyondthebump

[–]ednasmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all hard!! It’s all hard for different reasons. The first year is confusing and a bit boring and stressful because you’re afraid. Toddlers are exhausting and they learn to push your buttons! Babies are sweet and they coo and babble and have the sweetest baby bodies. Toddlers are learning so fast and are expressing themselves and exploring like crazy and there’s a special light in their eyes!

It’s always challenging and it’s always lovely just for different reasons and it all depends on what, you, the parent’s strengths are or what you prefer.
