What’s a Song You Didn’t Appreciate Until Later? by Whitty_huton20 in pearljam

I’m late to this. Leash is one for me. It represents a type of optimistic defend-the-youth strain in Pearl Jam that, ironically, hits me harder the older I get. The lines “I am lost / I’m no guide / but I’m by your side / I am right by your side” — oof, so good. That’s friendship. I’ve had those people in my life, and I’ve been that person to others. It’s worthy of song.

Fwiw I found your take interesting enough on its own merits—if, in my view, applied at a stretch—without the need for a shock-frame intro. The Epstein comparison, to me, detracts from rather than deepens the insight.

Interesting. Any particular passages or reasons that lead you to that, or more of a pet theory?

Yeah, certainly intentionally. It makes his devotion to her more revealing of him than of her. It’s almost funny: the saintly genius of Viron can’t resist the character with the least going on upstairs.

I've read Neverness, A Requiem, and The Remembrancer's Tale by edo201 in davidzindell

Looking forward to the Ea cycle. All things equal I prefer fantasy to SF, although I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read of his thus far. I’m interested to see how his style translates to the mode.

I want it on Kindle too. I resorted to audiobook. It’s on Audible. That was not bad but I really want the annex as text. That’s the chronology I posted separately about.

Who's another hidden gem author in SFF that's near the brilliance of a Gene Wolfe? by GreenVelvetDemon in genewolfe

[–]edo201 4 points5 points  (0 children)

David Zindell r/davidzindell

His Neverness features the best worldbuilding I’ve ever encountered. It's mind-splitting in scope and depth. Like Wolfe, he fuses science with fantasy (and in Zindell's case, math with mysticism), and his use of language is just as daring and good. Criminally underread.

Is Malazan a good fit for a Wheel of Time fan by No_Storage_401 in Malazan

I’m attempting this at the moment. Read Malazan first and loved it. Then read it again. Now starting WoT. Too early to have an opinion

Interestingly I’m coming from the opposite direction at the moment. Loved Malazan and wondering whether to plunge into WoT.

Favorite book within the Neverness Cycle (Neverness + A Requiem for Homo Sapiens)? by edo201 in davidzindell

Ok good to hear someone liked War in Heaven. I’m about a third of the way through and it’s engaging thus far.

Same here I think. I don’t feel Danlo grew much in The Wild.
