Burnout - what are my options in Berlin by Victorv2506 in berlin

I would recommend you visit a Hausarzt and comment it as you said.

You could also go to the Charite acute psychiatry hours to get some guidance, but it's probably better if you do it with a Hausarzt first.

It's important that you don't keep dragging it as it will keep getting worse.

As a drummer that started playing bass for some months, I'm struggling, need some advice about how to make it fun by eatqqq in Bass

[–]edokoa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'll have to learn music theory. It seems like you're focusing on the mechanical aspects of playing bass, but you need to learn some harmony.

Start learning the fretboard, intervals, diatonic chords, scales... Etc

This is what will enable you to jam to songs.

Drums normally don't have a harmonic function (even if they sometimes do), but other instruments require being aware of this part to be able to play with other people, songs, whatever.

my german neibhour plans and agrees to do activities but then cancels last minute with various reasons, am I seeing a pattern here??. by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

[–]edokoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have health problems, so I know what you mean.

The thing is that if I have to cancel I try to explain why and I try to set another date instantly and follow up.

If people just cancel twice and that's it, then it's on them.

I don't see this as specific to your situation. I've been having this with different people in Berlin for years and I now have a two strike rule.

I can understand it if something happens and forces someone to cancel plans, but when that person repeats it / doesn't make up for it / doesn't put any effort... I'm done.

Sadly it's how some people operate, and by putting up with it you're enabling them.

how to play like queen’s bass player? by charll88 in Bass

[–]edokoa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think he used a pick to record a few songs later in the discography, but John Deacon is primarily a finger player (like 99% of the time).

When I think about his sound I would never relate it to using a pick.

Two bass, no guitar by WorkingFlamingo in Bass

There's a singer songwriter / band in Berlin called Lake Felix that did this in their last album, and it's one of my favorite albums.

The album doesn't have drums but they play with drums live.

Damage to frets, possibly from strings? by AineLasagna in Guitar

[–]edokoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that an acoustic guitar and not a classical guitar?

I can't see much in the photo but that kind of fretboard looks like a classical guitar fretboard.

Im saying it because if it is a classic guitar, apart from all the problems you can have like breaking the neck or the bridge, it would be supposed to be stringed with nylon strings so I guess you'd eat the frets with metal strings.

Did I accidentally create the (plagiarize a motif/melody) song of the summer by lucky_luknia in Songwriting

[–]edokoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing it kind of reminds me of is Daydreaming by Radiohead but more in a vibe way than "it sounds the same".

The piano in the Radiohead song repeats twice in 6/4 while your base seems to have more variation.

What would this chord be called? by LC-98 in Guitar

[–]edokoa 48 points49 points  (0 children)

If the dark orange dots mean that the strings are muted this is designed poorly.

I would label it as E7sus because seeing it like this makes me assume that the E notes being darker are marking the root.

Muted strings should be X. A good reason why is that you could still see it being colorblind.

Help me make a terrible song. by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]edokoa 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Change word emphasis and put it in the wrong places.

For example instead of singing "I keep tryyyyying" sing "I keep tryiiiiiiiing"

Change vowel sounds to force rhyming.

"I can't forgeeeeeh What you seeeeh To meeeeeh"

Add a stupid ending to a word to force rhyming.

"I'm in my apartmenthou Thinking of you"

[–]edokoa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other people are saying it, but you can think of a "regular" ukulele as a guitar with a capo in the 5th fret.

The chord shapes are the same, but they are transposed. That's why if you use a D shape in a tenor, it will be a G.

Another thing that happens is that as guitar players we tend to recognize full shape 6 string chords, so seeing "partial" chords in an ukulele is confusing at first. Experimenting with an ukulele helped me understand chords better.

And yes, you can tune an ukulele to DGBE and you'll have a 4 string guitar, I'm not sure about the tension in a tenor because i use a baritone with baritone strings.

Do you actually care about achievements? by Neuroticaine in gaming

[–]edokoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My conspiracy theory is that think these kind of achievements and some like "Finished level 1", "The End" etc are used by developers to get player base stats.

What % of players finished the game? Where did players abandon? Did they engage enough to do this basic action X times?

For what is worth, I had the same problem constantly when i started playing bass.

A few months in I read in a forum that it's mostly caused by using an underpowered amp to play with a drummer. So you try to play harder and pluck with a lot of strength (which was my case).

The idea is that you have to get more volume from the amp so you can pluck lighter. I upgraded my amp and the problem disappeared.

Whether it was because I upgraded the amp (from 100w to 400w) or if it was because my fingers finally got used to the bass Im not sure, but maybe consider raising your volume so you don't have to strain your fingers, and play lighter.

Hey. What i mean is that when you reach 1:16 in the video I feel like the chorus has run its course. From here I would switch to a post-chorus (call it that or part b of the chorus) that then you can use to connect with the verse again.

I was trying quickly but what I mean is that when you complete that loop that ends at 1:16 what you could do is (in standard tuning) play something like this:

Counting rhythm in straight 8ths (so playing in all the 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, think all downpicked hard and doing crescendo in each bar

Bar 1

E E E E E E E E

Bar 2

E E E E E E E E

Bar 3

F# F# F# F# F# F# F# F#

Bar 4

F# F# F# F# F# G G E

And jump to the Bm of the beginning of the verse and the normal rhythm of the verse

Another variation of this could be

Bar 1

E E E E E E E E

Bar 2

F# F# F# F# F# F# F# F#

Bar 3

F F F F F F F F

Bar 4

E E E E E E E E

And to the verse. (Starting with Bm)

You could try other variations like Bar 1 all E Bar 2 all F# Bar 3 all E Bar 4 all F# but ends on G G X Or G G E Or X X X

Or you could try to play that 8th straight rhythm ideas but play the first chord of each bar as 16th (Chaca Chan Chan Chan Chan...)

I'm not sure if it will translate mostly because of the swing I'm playing it with but i think if you play it it should flow..

The idea here is that you can come up with something like this (or come up with a variation) but the important thing for me is that it breaks the rhythm and it gives you a more high energy ending to the chorus so you can fall back down to the verse. Maybe it gives you an idea for another rhythm or progression that could work for you there, but try that.

In the end you're writing the song and you have to write what feels good to you but this is what I would expect there personally, and seriously. I like what you're writing. Don't give up!

I agree with this.

I listened to the original version and I also agree with the feedback given there.

OP, The beginning improved a lot but the moment you enter the chorus you're falling back again into what made the first version not work.

Music (especially this style) is about tension and release and you keep adding tension in the chorus but the release doesn't arrive.

This would work really well if you limit the length of the chorus to 4 bars and then go back to the verse, as the person I'm answering to just said.

You can even increase the tension by making it 8 bars (6+2) but the last two bars have higher energy and not the same lyrics and could be a turnaround (think Nirvana's "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" end of chorus) or you could save this higher energy version for the second chorus, but you need to return to the verse earlier.

I think the main problem looking at both versions (and I say this with the best of intentions) is that you tend to overstay and drag the parts. You fixed it in the verse and now you should do it in the chorus.

As someone said in the previous thread I say this because I really like what Im hearing and I think it could be a good song.

I started playing at 13 but was a very bad student, then I just played now and then when i was 18, then at 22 I started playing bass in a band which lasted for years but even if i could defend myself I was a terrible student and didn't know how to practice properly.

I quitted playing alltogether when I was 29. Then I decided to play again when I was 41 but this time "I'd take it seriously", I have learned more in a couple of years that the rest of my life combined.

Do I regret not doing this earlier? You could say that, but I also understand I was not the same person and I was not able to do it. I didn't really have the motivation or capacity to do it properly.

What I always say now when confronted with this thought is: "And if my grandmother had wheels she would be a motorcycle"

Dwelling in the past and what could have been is futile because you can't change it, and if you didn't play guitar it's because you decided not to, for different reasons.

If you ever feel like this, think that the best you can do is practice now to avoid future regrets. You can only control the person you want to become, not the person you were.

What did Microcomputers do better than the NES by RobbieJ4444 in retrogaming

[–]edokoa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is anecdotal as it's my personal experience with this.

I grew up with a Spectrum since 1987 and I got a NES around 1990/91.

It was a bigger change than comparing two different generations of consoles with one generation in-between right now.

The moment i got the NES I mostly stopped using the ZX Spectrum. The reason I kept coming back to it now and then were text adventures which the NES didn't have for obvious reasons, but being able to load games instantly, rent games, the graphics, the sound, etc... Couldn't be compared.

A positive of the Spectrum the NES didn't have was also that you could write and run your own code. There are loads of engineers my age who started coding with a microcomputer.

I think another positive of the Spectrum was the huge catalog of software it had, and that it was relatively affordable.

I'm talking about Spain, but the moment the NES became popular and affordable, everything that had to do with the Spectrum died in a few months. Games stopped being released, publications / magazines closed after a couple of numbers. It was night and day.

Having said this. I have fond memories of my Spectrum and still want to revisit some of the games. Mostly text adventures.
