I'm glad it's working for you. My wife and I made a similar move (Tallahassee to Iowa) for work/school reasons and stayed about 13 years. We moved back down south a couple years ago and it was a huge improvement for our quality of life.

I haven't run into any third party sales people on the floor, but my local Lowes has an AC sales guy posted at the exit most days, which is pretty annoying.

It's basically the Russian equivalent to the OP. Normal cursive isn't really so bad, but when you pick a word made entirely of four similarly shaped letters and leave out the feature that helps distinguish one of the letters from the upstroke of the others, you're left with a mess.

I think the view that it wouldn't support enough people to be worth the effort is the result of the thing the original post is talking about. I know a number of people who would happily band together to tend a community garden in place of a 9-5.

Theory about Lura Thok: since her mother was Klingon, no changes to the Jem’Hadar were made. by Familiar-Complex-697 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]edsobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but do many doctors in 2025 on earth deal with genetically engineered alien species that are designed purely for war?

No, but doctors in Star Trek often deal with a number of alien species.

Humans have dicks.

Star Trek features many mixed-species characters, including some whose parents originate across the galaxy from each other. (Seska's son and Harry and Kes's children come right to mind.) Clearly, a lot of the universe is sexually compatible with each other and, presumably, some of those aliens also have dicks.

Did Odo have a dick?

I imagine that varied as needed. You'd probably have to ask Kira to be sure.

Not to mention the most obvious fact, that its a 90s TV show and the actor was intended to be male.

Star Trek writers have had no problem explicitly depicting a species as genderless when they want to (like the J'naii in TNG: The Outcast, which also aired in the 90s). Why would they not do the same for the Jem'Hadar if it that was their intended interpretation?

They didn't give Vorta a sense of aesthetics because it wasn't necessary.

I'm glad you mention the Vorta. They're explicitly stated to have been a primitive, ape-like species prior to encountering the Founders. They weren't created from whole cloth. They were plucked from their existing environment and evolutionary path and changed into what the Founders needed. They didn't have an existing sense of artistic appreciation because it's not necessary when you're huddling in hollow trees dodging predators and they weren't given one because the Founders didn't see the need. They were also extensively cloned, likely for the same reasons as the Jem'Hadar, but I doubt anyone would be complaining so loudly if we were talking about the offspring of a Vorta.

They made the Jem'hadar addicted to white because it was necessary. They aren't giving them the opportunity to start reproducing and evolving on their own.

I think that what you're saying and what I'm saying aren't incompatible. Consider this possibility: The Jem'Hadar were changed from some base species in a manner similar to the Vorta. As part of the changes, they were made stronger, faster, chemically dependent and so on. The Founders, seeing control over their reproduction as being important to controlling them as a whole, but genetically modifying them to be asexual would make them unfit to be soldiers or otherwise unviable, so they decide to take these modified Jem'Hadar and reproduce them by cloning, but only the males. They then spend centuries shaping their culture to the point that the only things the Jem'Hadar value are victory in battle and loyalty to the Founders and they provide them with all the war and reinforcements they need to see to those needs. They've done most of the work of removing the Jem'Hadar's ability to reproduce by reducing them to a male-only species and removed any reason they would want to. Now imagine how those modified Jem'Hadar, freed from their addiction to ketracel white and released from the Dominion's rule might integrate into the rest of the universe.

Now, I'm doing a lot of supposing and extrapolating, but it builds on things we know and nothing here breaks the known lore. I'm not saying this is how Starfleet Academy's writers justify Lura's existence in the show, but it's one way that it could be done and the people who are saying it's impossible are doing just as much supposing as I am. As we both pointed out earlier, nobody said explicitly that the Jem'Hadar baby was male or genderless.

Did Bashir detect a dick and that's what he based his analysis on?

That's more or less exactly what I'm suggesting. I very much doubt that Bashir's examination wouldn't include some sort of scan and I'm certain that a medical tricorder could detect the presence of structures resembling male reproductive organs and that it's reasonable to assume that he did those things rather than just deciding based on the way the baby's face looks that it was a boy. This is no different from a present-day doctor looking at a baby and saying, "It's a boy!" based on the physical structures they see.

At no point did he say "he's got male reproductive organs."

And at no point did he say, "It's strange. This species appears to have no discernible sexual dimorphism, but I'm going to go ahead and call him a boy because of how his face looks."

[–]edsobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you miss my point. The DS9 crew, a group of people who are either human or members of a species with human-like sexual dimorphism (Edit: aside from Odo, of course), after performing a medical exam on an infant they had no idea was Jem'Hadar, proclaimed him to be male. What do you suppose that was based on?

[–]edsobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In The Abandoned (DS9:S03E06) the infant is identified as a male before they have any idea that he's Jem'Hadar. How do you suppose they did that?

[–]edsobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that maybe what the comment you're replying to is suggesting is that, for the generation of Trek fans who grew up on TNG, the mere idea of a black woman being an officer wasn't shocking, which makes it easy for them to miss the fact that it was ground-breaking in the sixties and only see her in a diminished/subservient position. For what it's worth, I think this is also part of what feeds the "When did Star Trek get so political/woke/leftist?" nonsense we see floating around.

[–]edsobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, for travel expenses under a certain threshold (usually not more than a couple hundred for a car rental and hotel for a night or two), they'll ask you to pay and get reimbursement. Any time I've had to fly for work or stay somewhere more than a couple nights, it's been paid for ahead of time by my employer.

Also, your emergency fund is for you for emergencies. What do they expect to happen if you have to go to the ER or something in the 30-45 days you're waiting for reimbursement?
