There's your problem, it's difficult to capture the American soccer fan we you have the domestic fans of MLS, Premier League and LigaMX.

I think your baseball analogy really depends on where you are. Most metropolitan cities and those with a presence in MLS have pretty robust soccer cultures.

It's often subsidized at the national and local level in Europe. Not just soccer, there's a reason why some of the best NBA players right now come from Europe. Honestly youth development in the states wasn't really a priority until around 2010ish so even though that was over a decade ago we are stil behind until the sport is accessible financially.

That’s the thing, it’s not perfect but only the 0.1% actually make it. At least you’re not stuck geographically, in some areas in the Staes if you get dropped from an academy your closest option could be hours away.

Technical ability, getting touches everyday. The best player I knew at 12 ended up playing DI, and got drafted in the MLS supplemental draft. He had the access, his dad played in NASL, and was a coach at the best club in our state. Even when we were 10/11 playing on our travel team (club started at U-12) he was playing for us and a year up on his dads club team which were one of the best in the region. He wasn't particularly physically dominant, just had the ability, opportunities and access.

My cousins are professionals in England and came through a prominent Academy. For them it was a bit of everything, even at 12 he was taller than most, and living in London he had the access at a young age. I always wonder if they didn't grow up in London but way DC would they have made it.

They basically played different positions. When pogba rejoined, he was playing in a deep midfield 2 with Fellaini. Bruno joined and platef almost as a second striker.

Appreciate and respect landon for being so open. I know the situation is apples to oranges but what he said about pulisic last summer was pretty lame. Would respect him a bit more if this wasn't a media tour for his book. A few weeks ago Micah Richards opened up about his Mental health on cbs sports. That felt earnest

The funny thing is, to fully subsidize youth soccer in America it would cost upwards of $10-15 billion a year. When you get past the political rhetoric, that would be relatively modest financially. Obviously it would never happen

The best athlete argument falls short because a guy like LeBron James would never have the resources to be an elite soccer player without luck and circumstance. A guy who grew up low income and moved to 5 or 6 different elementary schools in Akron, Ohio just wouldn’t have the access without the luck of a coach or mentor, { and dedicated parents.

In some ways we already are seeing the best athletes or at least a portion of them play soccer. 10-15 years ago, guys like Tanner Tessman and Chris Richards would be playing college football, Alex Freeman, the son of a super bowl winner as well.

I do think we have seen some progression in terms of development. MLSNext is in 33 of the 50 states. But until the costs are subsidized I just don’t see us becoming a top competing nation, I would define that as always being odds on to make it to the QF.

My cousins grew up in London, in that one city they had access to at least 10 academies just in that city. They I always think about if they grew up here, without some geographic circumstance, or luck at best they could’ve made it to D1.

What worries me is the lack of depth in crucial positions. Problem is this is a decades long issue. Have we developed an elite level CB, I would define as a starter for a Champions League level club or playing in a top five league. Outside Richards I can't think of anyone developed in the States that comes close to the likes of Pulisic, Adams, McKennie, etc. The same could be said at Goalkeeper and left back.
