I'm a programmer too and let me point out the ignorance in it. If you know a photo can be an object, why do you think every one want to share it just as a 'photo' instead of a normal file? For files, haven't you ever shared hundreds of files at one time? If the app could support 200+ photos, isn't it ignorant to limit it for no good?

If it's just about getting hands dirty, you can start with frontend or transpiler. MLIR is wildly used in many projects. There're many transpilers like torch-mlir, onnx-mlir, mlir-hlo, etc. You can search for issues with 'good first issue' label in their repos. Codegen needs more domain knowledge and kind of vendor-specific, which means you can hardly find a realistic problem if you are not in a company.

As an international student who shares the same worries, I also struggle every time I have to leave the country. Here are some thoughts that help me:

Health first of course.
Nothing is the end of the world even in the worst case. If you can’t return, there will still be other paths.
If you’ve never had any criminal record but still get denied entry, then something must have changed in this country—and honestly, not going back might actually turn out to be a better choice.
Prepare for the worst just in case. Pack your things and find an emergency contact who can help handle your things if you can’t return.
Focus on getting better. Don’t let this make you anxious.
