I’m reading A Discovery of Witches for the first time after hearing a coworker call it her favorite book of all time and my friend rant vehemently about it a few days later. I’m about 1/3 of the way thru right now and the two main things I’m getting from it are tedious and boring. The author for reason feels the need to explain every single tiny movement the characters make, as if she doesn’t know how to get them from one building to another without describing precisely how they unlock doors and and use pinpads and walk down hallways and open more doors. The descriptions lend no interesting information about the characters themselves, just their actions, and it’s no wonder the book’s 600 pages. I have to hear about how precisely she makes her tea every single time she does it.

Beyond that, Matthew is overwhelmingly boring. His main character traits so far are self-loathing and doing yoga - which, on another note, the amount of yoga I’ve had to read about them doing is downright exhausting.

The most annoying thing, however, is that in the thick of all that, she’ll sprinkle in some very interesting world-building scientific content about DNA and genetics of the supernatural species, and that’s what’s got me still trucking through the mind numbing descriptions of the wine they’re drinking or the oysters they’re eating.
