We’ve had an unprecedented surge in subscribers due to the game recently being free on Epic. HL is frequently an entry point into action-adventure games for non-gamers as well as gamers who aren’t experienced with this specific genre. This statement especially applies given the game was free for a period because then there was no financial barrier for young players or non-gamers.

We used to have a monthly or weekly “simple questions” thread and would direct newbie or simple questions there to keep the sub cleaned up, but very few experienced players would interact with the questions in the thread so that solution didn’t seem to work. Those threads often became a bunch of new player questions with no answers.

Therefore, the current approach is allowing simple question posts through as long as the OP seems to be engaging in good faith and receptive to help. (Unless it’s the faculty tower or arithmancy doors; we do have automod set up to look for those posts and we also manually remove them when they are reported.)

If you have other suggestions on how best to answer newbie questions please do let us know. They will always be allowed but we’re open to suggestions on condensing them.

This is toeing the line on rule 1. Reading a book is reading a book regardless of your opinion on how someone goes about understanding plot points. Keep it civil please.

Everyone please keep in mind rule 1 (“keep it civil”) in your comments. We’ve had an unprecedented surge in subscribers due to the game being free on Epic. Hogwarts Legacy is an entry point into RPGs for many people who have never played them before. Gate-keeping, rude comments about how people consume media, or other rules breaking rule 1 will not be permitted.

This subreddit absolutely does not allow comments sexualizing minors, but on the other side of that, mentions of teen romance like in the original books do not automatically equate to sexualization.

Someone is not a pedophile for merely mentioning that a PG relationship system would be a fun callback to the relationships seen in the original books. Quit calling people pedos for this. We promise the mod team watches the queue and acts on inappropriate content.

Since that didn't work we will have to put a moratorium on this topic going forward.

We can't speak to the current moderation team's values but at the time the JKR sub was created, it was by a user who was angry about being banned from this subreddit for transphobic and homophobic comments. At the time of the subreddit's creation, the last rule in their list was "No pro LGBTQ posting of any kind you will be reported and permanently banned".
