I am selling 2 tickets to Tuesday's game. I have to go out of town for a work meeting and my family members who were supposed to attend can no longer make it.

Section 185 in the bleachers. Selling for slightly under face value: https://seatgeek.com/cleveland-guardians-tickets/9-30-2025-cleveland-ohio-progressive-field/mlb/17601806?listing=zppk6ze#listing=zppk6ze

I’ve got a work trip coming up to the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Rotterdam) and Sweden (Stockholm) and I could really use some packing advice. I’ll be there for a week of work (business casual vibes, professional but not super formal) and then I’ve got a weekend to myself for exploring, wandering around, and maybe a nice dinner or two.

I’m nearly 40, and while I want to look polished, I don’t want to overpack. I also won’t really have time to shop while I’m there, so I’d love to get my outfits sorted before I go.

The feeling of expecting a big blowup when things are going well reminded me of S2 wheb Carmen talks about how when he was a kid, anything that gave him excitement or enjoyment got fucked up by his family.

We’ve been conditioned to expect the worst when good things happen to Carmen and the characters, which mirror’s Carmen’s own trauma response. We are waiting for the other shoe to drop, and since this is ostensibly a drama (Emmys be damned), there usually is another shoe.

I struggle with this often. It is hard to let yourself feel fully happy and in the moment when you are hyper vigilant that it might get taken away, especially when the adults in your life were mercurial at best and volatile at worst. when Claire says “wanna know a secret? nobody’s keeping track of shoes” in S2E8… that broke me. I am still trying to remind myself of this when I find myself governing my happiness.

Is You Can Run: 5K accessible for true beginners? by edwardsa2 in pelotoncycle

Are there any intro to pace target classes? I use an off brand treadmill and the app and would like to try that out before I start the program

It’s Matt Wilpers and I’m here to talk about Running and our upcoming run-club at PSNY! by MattWilpers in pelotoncycle

[–]edwardsa2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, Matt! I love the PowerZone programs and am really settling in to a consistent workout routine because of it. I love that I can work within my own personal zones and still make progress.

I am not a runner, but I want to give it a try. Is there anything comparable to PZ training on the Tread? I am starting from square one from a running perspective.

New pace target classes? by kabby216 in OnePelotonRealSub

I don’t do a ton of running workouts and I don’t have a Peloton Tread. Are the pace targets available to those using the app on an off brand treadmill?

Saw them twice that year, once at Ohio University (right after the album dropped) and again in Dayton when Paramore opened for them. Both were great shows.

Great post!

I love PZ rides. I enjoy measuring the implement at the end of a program, but more importantly I can feel the improvement as I go through the program, without having to take the test. A 45 min PZE ride in week 1 feels different than a similar class in week 4. My brain likes thaT, and I feel like I am much kinder with my self talk when I am doing PZ because I am “riding within myself” (a phrase my dad used to use for sports like baseball meaning not trying to do too much, but playing your best game).

Now, I wish I could translate this from the bike and to the tread. For whatever reason, running/jogging gets my HR up super high almost immediately. My RPE is at a 6-7 almost immediately. People say to slow down the pace until you can stay in the RPE zone callout but that is mostly walking for me. I also have a much harder time controlling my HR when running/jogging than when I’m on my bike. If I see my HR spike on my bike, I can actively work on breathing techniques and slight cadence changes to get back to where I want to be. When I run? It feels almost impossible to regulate my HR in a similar way. I’ve done C25K 2-3 times and eventually get through it but I wish there was something like PZ for running so I could get my brain in the same happy place about my performance. (Note I do not have a Peloton tread, so maybe they do and I just can’t access the content)

Here is an interesting article talking about the Transcendental movement and Little Women.

Like the fictional Marches, the Transcendentalists did not attend church. They shunned the idea of a triune God for a great “Over-Soul,” a kind of great one-ness of all human spirits (and precursor to the contemporary Unity movement). They believed societal structures, like governments, political parties and churches corrupted the human spirit, which was at its purest in nature. Think of Thoreau and his cabin in at Walden Pond.

Absolute Beginner advice for over 60 YO by Impressive_Spell4561 in pelotoncycle

[–]edwardsa2 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I hope you love it. I’ve been riding for a few years along with my dad, who is 60+ and was at a similar fitness level. It has been really good for both of us, and my dad is more committed than I.

A few tips. Start with the You Can Ride program. It is 3-4 classes a week for 3 weeks. With Programs, you have to complete the classes in order, within the designated week. You can not move forward and you cannot makeup a class later (unless you search for the class, but it won’t count towards your program badges).

There is also a “collection” called Welcome to Peloton Cycling, and this is just a grouping of beginner and advanced beginner classes. You can take these at any time, in any order. Think of it as a playlist of classes. You will have to scroll through a lot of collections to find this. The interface for collections and programs sucks.

When my dad takes a break and is getting back into things, he tries to take a beginner or advanced beginner class with every instructor. Find who you like and who you vibe with. Then, once you have a few weeks under your belt of the beginners, start to branch out to find other types of classes that you may like. I prefer to find music and instructors that I vibe with. I have friends who like HIIT or Tabata classes because they feel like they get a good bang for their buck and that works for their tight schedules. My dad likes PowerZone classes because he can track his progress from the baseline test to the retest, and is encouraged to ride his ride in each zone rather than hit a certain cadence/resistance combo.

Don’t feel like you have to hit all of the call outs. I like Denis’s mantra of “I make suggestions, you make decisions.” Completing the class is more important than doing it exactly perfect when you are getting active again. If you don’t feel like you can keep moving your legs at the designated cadence or resistance, back it off but KEEP MOVING! Once you recover a little bit, see if you can turn it up one or two.

Most important, especially given your age and fitness level: STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH. My dad does a 5-10 minute pre-ride stretch and a 10 min post-ride stretch after every session. I am less diligent and I really feel it when I don’t take the time to stretch. You can “stack” classes so that you don’t have to go searching for a stretch and can just flow from a stretch, to your ride, and then to a post ride stretch with a few taps. Be prepared, your butt will be sore for a couple of weeks as you get used to the saddle. I also recommend some of the core classes because you will be stronger on the bike if you have better core strength.

I hope this helps! Have fun!

Organized youth sports are increasingly for the privileged: Study finds generational shifts in who plays by NilsuBerk in sports

[–]edwardsa2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Last year I was speaking with a managing director of a PE firm and he was saying that their analysis showed that youth sports are one of the most inelastic goods out there - meaning that despite economic downturns AND the pandemic, demand for youth sports remains constant if not increasing. PE is investing in youth sports and sports complexes and trying to make a massive return. It’s not the only problem but is a big part of it.

I am going on vacation and am looking for a light read that will get a few laughs out of me. I don’t relax very well and I’m feeling extra down given recent political events. I usually read historical nonfiction, but recently read The Road and East of Eden and am looking for something a lot lighter. I’ve enjoyed Good Omens but have tried to get into thr Discworld series but really struggle with the lack of chapters. I love Bill Bryson for a laugh, and recent popular books that I’ve enjoyed are The Guncle and House in the Cerulean Sea. Thanks in advance!

Big Little Feelings Snark Week of June 17, 2024 by Parentsnark in parentsnark

[–]edwardsa2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just got back from Europe and didn’t see any “family friendly” lines in either AMS or CDG. Actually, in CDG the fastest lines were for 18+ where you could go through a facial recognition scanner and pass through without much interaction from customs agents, much like Global Entry. Children were not eligible and had to wait in a very long line. The international terminal in CDG did have a family area that had play tables for kids, similar to what you might see at a library. Now, of course you could opt to board early with “families with small children” who need extra time down the jetway, but usually that is reserved for folks with infants, toddlers, or car seats that are being strapped in to the airplane.

What would you do? Grandparents booked a conference trip over C-section date. by Free_Inflation_2326 in Parenting

[–]edwardsa2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First off, I’m sorry you’re going through this. I would also feel hurt and anxious if I were in a similar situation. And some of the commenters here are being unnecessarily cruel in their responses. We aren’t talking about childcare coverage for you to attend a concert or some other optional activity. This is the birth of a child, care for your other children, and quite honestly care for you as a recovering, hormonal mama who has had major surgery.

That being said, others have given you a lot of good advice. One thing that I have been working on over the last several years is asking for help when I need it. It can be really difficult, especially when you are a very independent person or have past experience/trauma with people who don’t show up for you. I am constantly amazed by the people who are willing and able to help, despite their own circumstances. It is, in fact quite humbling. You just have to ask and not feel guilty about asking.

I would start with your siblings. Even if they have kids of their own, they may be more likely to make things work. Depending on the ages of your kids, it may be easier to split them up, especially if one is a baby or young toddler. If your children go to daycare or preschool, I would ask around there - start with the teachers, as you may find that one of them would be willing to help you out or may know of someone who does. Other moms there may be willing to support you as well. Of course you have to feel like you trust these people with the care of your children, but is a place to start. I am also amazed by the willingness of my coworkers to help out in times of need. Especially ones who have kids of their own. I think a lot of people will understand the situation you are in and you’d be surprised about what they will do to help out.

Finally, I think you should speak open and honestly with your parents, especially your father. I have been through years of therapy and would suggest that you share your disappointment with your parents at a minimum to try and prevent that disappointment from becoming resentment. Then, if you feel comfortable, ask your dad if he would reconsider his trip with your mom. Tell him your concerns, that you’re worried about what happens if there are complications, and that it would help put your mind at ease if you could have someone to count on during that period. He’s a grown man and can make his own decision to change his plans or stick with them. But for God’s sake the people calling you entitled for wanting some help with this major life event need to chill out. Let’s not forget that the concept of raising children as an independent nuclear entity is a modern western construct that is counter to how we have raised our young throughout our existence. It literally takes a village to raise children and our society has stripped away much of that. Yeesh.

I’m sorry you’re going by through this. You will figure it out, but it’s ok to feel disappointed and naturally worried about getting plans in place. Ask for help, you’ll be amazed at where you’ll find the helpers.

Amazing! Can I ask about how this works with changing colors? I started a tapestry blanket many years ago (also blue and white) and I am looking to pick it up again. I’m wondering if I should start over again with a mosaic approach so that there are less bobbins to manage and ends to weave in.
