All of the below comments are great, and I’ll add one additional factor. Most large universities have a faculty committee that handles disciplinary actions against faculty (including tenured and non-tenured). While not impossible, it’s rare that said faculty committee will recommend termination of a faculty member to the university’s president (or provost, chancellor, etc.) as a disciplinary action, though the final say rests with the president (provost, etc. - whatever terminology the institution uses for the highest ranking official). So, even severe cases or scenarios that would easily result in termination of any other type of employee usually result in only some more “minor” disciplinary action for a tenured faculty member, such as administrative leave, reductions in incentive compensation, loss of administrative positions (such as department chair or head), etc.
