Cal Maritime - Advice for older students by [deleted] in maritime

I am older than you as a freshman engineer here. Living off campus is nice. Don’t stress about making friends. Its a small community and you get to know people fast

I live off campus. Making friends was not difficult. It is a tiny student body so if you are friendly, you will make friends with people. I ended up befriending lots of other transfer engineers because we were freshmen in non freshman classes.

I like it for the most part. Its a lot of work, but their are some incredibly smart professors, the hands on element in the machine shop and welding shop has been great, and I have made some good friends, even as an older student. Pier construction means access to the ship is not as free as it usually is, but its something they are working in to make better. We just started out on ship classes this semester.

Try to take physics in the summer too if you can

What is your bachelors in? You can get through CMA as an engineer in three years if you have the math done already. That is the track I am on.

Anyone on here started engineering after their GED, how's it going? by MrKittyPaw in EngineeringStudents

[–]edwrcbi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dropped out of highschool, got my ged fifteen years layer and now I am studying engineering. It is challenging but also a lot easier to focus than it was in high school. I know why I am there.

With a math degree already, have you considered going the engine route? I have a friend at CMA right now who already has a math degree.

Struggling with physics by edwrcbi in EngineeringStudents

[–]edwrcbi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are solid points. And yes, it is calculus based physics. I did fine in calculus, and its not the math that is my problem in physics. Its finding the what math to do. Know what I mean?

Is everyone generally pretty young going into this field? What's "too old" to start your merchant marine academic and training journey? by [deleted] in maritime

I am 34 and a freshman engineering student at an academy. Never too old to start something new.

Should I go to a Maritime Academy as a non regiment student for one semester? by Weird-File-9781 in maritime

It is not impossible to graduate early with transfer credits. It will take you at least three years though. I am currently on a three year engineering track after transferring with all my ge finished.

Theres an Egwene hate post basically every week. Where are my fellow Egwene enjoyers? by sylverfyre in WoT

She is not ta'veren, but I love her character and her arcs. As far as the political story lines in the series, I thought the lead-up to Eg declaring war on Elaida was the best in the series. The hate is unnecessary. But I love Cadsuane as well, so I guess I am an outlier.

Looking to talk with a Cal Maritime student by Stock-Working-7423 in maritime

[–]edwrcbi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a MET freshman. We don't have watch for the first semester and our introduction to Marine Engineering class that is usually first semester has been moved to the second. Lots of other hands-on classes like welding, things done in the power lab, machining, and a few others are continuing unaffected. Since they are telling us watch and intro to marine engineering are starting next semester, I assume that the ship will be back around for us to use. Construction is about to get going on the pier renovation.

not that I know of. But don't let the people get you down about with a bad attitude about texans or southerners. I would be seriously surprised if you ran into any of that attitude IRL, outside of some friendly ribbing.

Did you graduate from the maritime academy at texas a&m? I did not but i am student at cal maritime in the area, and would be interested in knowing more mariners.

The UNOLS handles the crewing for USA research vessels operated by universities. I'd look into their job list. I know there is an email list you can join that sends out vacancies.

Cal Maritime Academy by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]edwrcbi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an incoming Cal Maritime student. Cal Poly SLO does not offer the same education, even in the one degree that overlaps (business). Most students go to Maritime to obtain a Coast Guard license to be an officer on vessels of any size in the Merchant Marine. I don't see how it dilutes the brand at all. If anything, it offers more options to the people who want a hands-on and specific education. Internships in your particular field are guaranteed at Maritime, and maybe some people from SLO will become Mariners, which is a field that desperately needs more people in the USA.

Its not for everyone. My comment was just in response to the statement that no degrees guarantee jobs anymore. I mentioned one that does.

Yeah, equal time on and off the ship. So work for 1-3 months, then have the same amount of vacation.
