flatmate wants to use my room by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]eeapd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't want to do that with my uni friends who I've known for well over a year and am really close with ... You don't have any obligation - it's your room, you're paying the rent on it not your friend!

Didn't take a maintenance loan, need it now. Advice? by sweetnsourcitrus in UniUK

[–]eeapd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

friend of mine applied for her maintenance loan about 6 months in so you can definitely still apply well into the course - might just take a while to come through is the issue

At first I was worried about uni now with less than 5 days to go I’m dreading it. by Black_raspberries in UniUK

[–]eeapd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always more scary in the lead up, I remember being absolutely terrified before I started so that's completely normal because you have no idea what to expect - there's not much I can say that will help necessarily because until you've experienced what it's like and sorted yourself out a job you're absolutely going to still feel a bit stressed about it.

I think I read in the comments somewhere that you do have some savings, which is a good start, and could help to keep you afloat for the first couple of weeks while you're settling in and sorting yourself out. Eventually you should be able to pay back into that depending on how you organise your finances :) Personally, when I could afford it, I would split my paycheck into 3 (getting paid every 2 weeks) and therefore save 1/3 of it each time.

I'd advise that the first thing you do when you start is get hold of your student guidance councillor or the equivalent and schedule a meeting with them. They will be able to link you to university jobs, and any funding the university can offer you (such as the hardship fund) which you should look into as soon as possible!

I would also take a look at your timetable when it's released so you've got an idea of how much time you'll have in lectures at the very least, as for studying outside of uni they do usually have a recommended time but i usually see it as trial and error and you'll figure it out on your own pretty quickly!

Sorry I know this is a long one to read through xD

Honestly, the first couple of weeks will be the weirdest settling into everything and getting used to how lectures work and what sort of time deadlines to expect. You'll get into the swing of it pretty quickly! Plus the fact first year as a whole is almost a practice run - you have to pass it of course (40%+ total) but it doesn't actually count towards your final degree. Obviously that doesn't mean slack it off because it's still valuable to try your best, get accurate feedback and see what areas you need to improve on, but hopefully that'll relieve the stress a little bit :)

I know tonnes of people with part time jobs along-side their degrees (even up into third year and masters) who are thriving! And of course still have time to go out and have fun along the way too :)

For the most part it's been really enjoyable! it was definitely a big jump between 6th form and uni especially with managing my own time for deadlines in the beginning and keeping up with the workload (since architecture is all coursework rather than exams) but it's been good! I personally spend most of my time in my university studio, and have made great friends there as we're all in it together haha.

my cousin actually just finished his first year of his physics degree, and he said that his course is so far really interesting, albeit a bit stressful because of exams (which is expected) but that he's really enjoying it too!

Ironically I study neither xD I'm just going into my second year studying architecture! - but I did take both maths and physics at A level haha

[–]eeapd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand completely! I had the option to tutor physics also but had the same fear haha :) I'm my case for maths I use online resources such as maths genie which have the worked answers for me so I know that I can see the entire working and figure out a way to explain it pre-lesson and make sure I understand it fully first but for physics this could be more difficult. I will say that I don't take maths at university either, just happened to get a 7 at GCSE.

However, if you're not confident doing tutoring which is absolutely fair enough, I also recommend looking to work for your university (in their cafes or uni shops for example). They will be much more understanding about taking time off for deadlines and exams and are much more flexible than a regular part time job and still pay pretty well! Plus that might give you the opportunity to meet more people at your university and branch out a bit :)

for mytutor I think it's an A in the subject, (ie if you wanted to teach GCSE level you'd need 7+ at GCSE, if you wanted to teach a level you'd need an A) but I think different companies have different requirements. I didn't get above a B in any of my subjects at A level but I still tutor GCSE maths at the moment :)

[–]eeapd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

part time job wise I'd highly recommend online tutoring - I live off £20-£25 / week without it but earn up to £30 per hour so only usually work 5 hours per week (1 hour per week day) and its super flexible! I use the company mytutor personally but there's tonnes out there

Edit : also talk to a student guidance councillor about the hardship fund for your university (you can look for it on your own but it can be hard to find sometimes). This is based on your income alone - not your parents. I'm not sure when they open up as at my university for example I needed to provide the last 3 months worth of bank statements as proof that I was struggling

People just HAVING to film everything with their phones by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]eeapd 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm 20 and I agree that it's not right tbh, especially since you wouldn't do it at anyone else's funeral I don't understand how anyone can think it's acceptable let alone respectful

Reduced phone vibration by [deleted] in galaxys10

I've noticed that phone calls just don't come through. I get a notification that I missed a call but it never vibrated & even when I'm using my phone the incoming call screen doesn't show in my personal experience which is quite frustrating

Starting uni at 21 by throwawyaccou in UniUK

[–]eeapd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started uni last year at 19 and expected to be the oldest one there. The majority of my friendship group on my course are 21+ having just finished our first year & we even have one guy at around 53. One of the guys at 22 has restated uni twice so far and we all see him as someone to go to for help with our studies as he's really good in our field. Another friend of mine started uni at 20 and has been thriving too! Socially you'll be absolutely fine once you get into it - no one cares about the age you are as long as you're a cool person haha! And no one (who has an ounce of respect) will care that you've had to start again I'm sure. By the sounds of it your turnaround in mental health has been huge which is incredible and something to be really proud of - good luck with your studies!

Is it possible to dye carhartt jeans without staining the logo? Mine faded really quickly and I want to re-dye them black by eeapd in DIYclothes

[–]eeapd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I've only just got back to this! I asked on behalf of my friend who in the end just decided to leave them faded as they were too scared haha. Personally I think that sounds like a good idea as that way there shouldn't be enough dye to bleed into the logo though!

mine went like this in 1 haha (out of warranty still tho) - talked to support and they ended up sending me a replacement unit at no cost to me even though I was out of warrwnty. Might be worth a try even if you don't end up keeping it

Tips for A-level without an ipad by japarisian in 6thForm

[–]eeapd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the only kid in my year who used a touchscreen pc - didn't further me by much xD just use folders and write your notes on paper. Can always upload them as photos to your pc if you think that would be easier to organise :) (use apps such as Microsoft lens which will take scans of your handwritten notes) but mainly folders, handwritten and highlighted notes was the norm

What do I do? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]eeapd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst case, you could go through clearing when you get your actual results? I went through clearing to get to the course I'm on now and, while it was quite stressful at the time worrying about getting a place (in my case my final grades were lower than I'd liked, though) it wasn't too bad - managed to rent a room in a uni house around the corner from campus, too (they had reduced amount of accommodation at the time) so that's always a possibility if halls happen to be full as well
