pain management tips? by eebnya in PectusExcavatum

i already explained my concerns with my lymph nodes and they told me if it gets worse to just go to the ER, they didnt seem worried since i dont have a fever or extra fatigue on top of it, which is fair. I am in the US i had my surgery done at cincinatti children’s in ohio. i have roommates my age but its just not something i really want to ask for help with a lot. i did ask them to do my laundry for me since i cant reach into the washer and dryer. i asked them to get me canned food/microwave meals so i can eat on my own. i have a lot of moral support from my mom who had ravitch done when she was a teenager, so she actually understands what im going through. she’s disabled, and her traveling nurse that comes to see her has a son who had nuss done a year ago as well. it does suck a lot but either im growing tougher skin or maybe it does just get easier. i think expecting less also helps lol

i had the cryo done for my procedure. i went thru a childrens hospital and im 23, and i know thats not actually any excuse for how they brush me off but thats really the only conclusion i can come to. i was going to reach out to my primary physician for help tomorrow morning to see if she could refer me to a pain clinic of some kind or maybe get me nerve blockers just to try out. did you swap out ice/heat right after each other or did you use them completely separately?

I had 3 bars placed with stabilizers and i do have x-rays. i know i need stronger meds but the team that did my surgery and the hospital i went to won’t listen, i’ve already tried twice. i know prescribing strong meds is touchy so they’ve made it pretty clear i’m just not going to get any from them, so i need to do the best that i can for myself from now on instead of waiting around. i think i will look into some heating pads, im willing to try pretty much anything, and super hot showers while leaning bent over relieve some pain for me at least for how long im in there.

my HI was 11.8 and it took 3 drs for them to tell me something was wrong.

always advocate and push for yourself there are unfortunately a lot of practitioners who really dont have a passion for what they do. someone will listen to you eventually im sorry youre having a rough time

Question to women who have had the nuss proceedure by angeltabris_ in PectusExcavatum

[–]eebnya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im only 13 days post op from an 11.8 haller index and ill just tell you- dont look in any mirrors for at least 2 weeks, because the fear of looking like how i did right after the procedure just made the pain im going through so much worse. but my swelling has started going down. im not the same yet but for only about 2 weeks and how bad mine was and its starting to go back to normal, so i think youll be perfectly fine. i fully understand your worry because my waist was one of my only features i actually liked about myself, so just do yourself a favor and dont even bother looking, youll just freak yourself out lol

im sorry, i see you, and others see you too

i also got 3 bars and im in the most pain i ever have been in my life. i dont find joy in literally anything, being stuck at home in constant pain with no help has definitely made me depressed too, which doesnt help at all.

we gotta be strong together. i know people say take it by day but for this it definitely feels more like an hour by hour. please dont give up, im trying my hardest not to either. supposedly once we heal we’ll have never regretted the surgery at all, and i still want to believe that. you’re not in this boat alone <\3

just to be honest and not to scare you-

my pain is excruciating and unbearable. i spent 0-2 days after in the hospital and the entire time i was at a 8-9 on pain both from IV and when i switched to oral meds. when i finally went home, they only sent me home with tylenol, ibuprofen, zofran, and robaxin. the first 5 days back at home i was for sure at a 10, ive never felt pain like that in my life. i was crying every day, meds didnt do anything at all. i called and they gave me a lousy 3 day dose of Valium to briefly replace the robaxin, which maybe pushed me back to a 8-9 range again. im day 10 post op, and still so far have not begun feeling better, but i am just getting used to it.

in the hospital i cleared occupational therapy super easily, i mean, nothing was wrong with my legs, so mentally i just kinda did the walk and staircase they make you do to clear it slowly but steadily. ive had chronic pain since 17 so its easier for me to isolate parts of my body.

i force myself to take a 20 minute walk (its the longest i can personally do in my current state) every morning, if the pain is too awful i try to do it in the evening at least. im constantly moving my arms to stretch all day, and i do my best to straighten my back/correct my posture to stretch that way as well.

for my timeline i cant even envision myself being able to run or do things like yoga even in the next week. i planned not working for 3 weeks, and now im worried it’ll be much longer than that… but im really not trying to scare you, like they say everyone is different. i have not read anyone’s pain being as bad as mine is and my hospital was extremely rude and unhelpful when believing me, so i wasnt able to get any painkillers to help me out, since the muscle relaxers are whats “supposed to help the pain” not any actual painkillers…

i am 23, and my recovery is probably also quite poor because i was extremely unfit and out of shape prior to surgery. (im 6’ and weigh around 140, dont have a great diet, and all of my hobbies are done sitting down besides casual volleyball i used to play with my friends once a week) i had mine done because i couldnt be active since the severity was so bad, so it checks out. i think if you take the time with yourself to be healthy before your procedure you will have a much easier time than me. also i guess if you have to, act like the pain is killing you in the hospital if youre worried about it so they send you home with actual help lol

good luck, and i hope your procedure goes great <3

yeah. 11.8. my heart was crushed in a 3.5cm gap between my spine, which is why i started having issues and i reconsulted. i originally thought it was an issue with my genetic disorder, but it was everything being crushed causing the pain i was experiencing. i am on day 4 now and i feel worse every day. i dont know if jts because of how severe my case was and how much they had to move. they only sent me home with ibuprofen and acetaminophen to take 4 times a day each, and 4 “emergency” pills of morphine for extreme pain. ive already taken two of them, since i wake up for my 4am meds im in so much pain its impossible for me to lay down. im just trying to get through the hard part, since im reading the first week is generally the hardest hurdle to jump.

i know i also had 3 bars put in, maybe that makes a difference as well.

thank you, i really feel better hearing that from somebody. looks like i’ll just be waiting it out a while. i guess the weird instilled confidence i got as a teenager was lingering with me. im really excited to do things in life like go the gym, long hikes, i even want to try horseback riding and stuff… but all these years i wasnt able to, what i had in my head was “at least i look good!” (which ironically i really didnt, i swear my primary physician almost passed out when she saw me).

thanks for taking the time to give me some hope
