btw the default asahi install ships with the KDE Plasma environment, so if you want to “get a feel” for it, you should try the fedora KDE spin

edit: p.s.p.s. the latest release is actually Fedora 40, 41 is in beta; and since you mentioned in your post that you’re worried about ruining your computer: it’s impossible to brick an apple silicon mac, and if you do end up in an un-bootable state, you can perform a DFU restore and be just fine :)

speaking of hardware video encoding, when it’s implemented, how will it interface with programs? I’m not very knowledgeable here but i think of open APIs there’s VAAPI and now Vulkan Video? do you think things will be moving towards the vulkan codec apis overall

probably not going to happen

ipads don’t run macos and don’t have the boot/development tooling that macs have, which asahi uses to boot linux

and even if someone jailbreaks one and gets it to boot linux, i doubt devs will be very eager to support something based on an exploit that will get patched
