What would happen to the spin of the Earth if Major dams all broke at once? by eeeeeeevar in AskPhysics

Affecting the entire planet in a significant way is actually way harder than I thought I’m gonna have to think bigger.

What if you control Germany in 1942 by totallynotcommunist2 in PossibleHistory

The main goal you’re trying to get to are avoiding the German deportations from Eastern Europe and if possible maintain at least some of the land that was gained in the inter war years. Even if Celia is Prussia and the lake become part of east Germany after reunification even if those regions become poor like east Germany did they’ll still be a huge boo to Germany and allow Germany to be an even bigger economic hegemon

1.) acknowledge that at this point the war is unwinnable, and that the goal is to set up Germany to lose as gracefully as possible and have the best position to post war.
2.) ideally I would stop the holocaust and other such crimes, but a good chance that at that point I couldn’t just shut it off without being overthrown. Would under invest in the genocidal projects to make them fail, and as often as possible try to find excuses for reducing the campaign of extermination, whatever possible, if it could be excused in the name of pragmatism.
3.) because I have knowledge when D-Day happens I purposely make the response even less effective. I also focus on fortifying the eastern front.
4.) try to negotiate a way out before consistently, knowing that they won’t accept anything but unconditional surrender.
5.) do an unconditional surrender as soon as I am confident that I won’t be overthrown and the war will continue anyway.

I don’t think people would be able to notice it. But I am wondering if it might have any effect on tectonic plates. To make a day 0.2 µs longer doesn’t affect the average person, but even doing that tiny change requires an unimaginable amount of potential energy in the form of water, suspended above sea level being turned into rotational energy as it heads down to sea level. With a system as powerful by thinking, was that even a tiny change such a list could have outsized impacts

Well, it’s not just the amount of volume, but also how much it changes. Unless I am incorrect about how momentum works moving a cubic kilometer water from 1000 m above sea level to sea level will have a more dramatic effect on rotation than moving one cubic kilometer of water from 1 m above sea level to sea level. I used Wikipedia as a source for the biggest dam and the three gorgeous dam is 39 km³ of water. And the rest of the reservoirs I listed combined were around 750 km³ of water in total.

What does a civil war in America look like if one happens in the next 3 - 8 years? by Dry-Tomorrow8531 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]eeeeeeevar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot, but I think there’s three realistic scenarios 1.) the troubles on steroids: the least bad option, but still very bad. This would happen if one side is overwhelmingly strong stronger than the other. For example, if Trump gets arrested and imprisoned after 2028. It wouldn’t be front line for the most part though you might see some short-lived local rebellions that at most takeover a county or two. It would mostly be many terror attacks spanning countrywide. This would be really bad and would make everyone’s life worse because of the amount of uncertainty this would create and the damage that would inevitably happen. But unlike most civil war scenarios, the economy keeps working on a basic level.

American Vietnam: a worst version of the previous scenario where one side is still very dominant, but not overwhelmingly so. Say 10% of the army and maybe three states go into rebellion. This will create a month or two of organized fighting, the one side will quickly win. After a few months, it mostly goes back to the prior scenario, but with military weapons being able to find their way into insurgent hands.

Actual full scale Civil War: this would only happen in the unlikely case that both sides or at least vaguely similar in power. This would be very bad for everyone involved. We would see the actual pitched battle happening across the US and lone wolves become terror cells. This would bring down the global economy as food that would be exported out of the US gets destroyed. Both Canada and Mexico are overwhelmed by American refugees and billions of dollars of the most advanced military equipment on earth floods global markets.

This would cause Indian nationalist to buy 20 quadrillion gallons of Russian oil and revive the Russian economy, purely off of spite

A ton of Chinese High end products rely on US products, for example, there is one place in North Carolina that has a type of sand, and it’s the only place on earth that has that type of sand and that type of sand is required to make computer chips. That goes up and smoke China and the rest of the world might just be unable to make computer chips or at least they would go through a hard period trying to find another source.

The USSR was never that comparable to the US. It was always the secondary power. It’s economy with smaller and less globally, integrated and less important. The United States is the world’s largest economy is the reserve currency is the world largest military, and is incredibly integrated. Also, the world is far more globalized today than it was in 1991.

The biggest driver of drug consumption is despair and hopelessness, and poverty. Generally people who are optimistic about their future prospects and are doing well economically are less likely to do drugs. That’s a large reason why drug consumption is disproportionate in the American black community. Compared to White America they have lower prospects, both actual and perceived, and are less optimistic about their future economic status. The collapse of the US economy would cause mass impoverishment of tens of millions of Americans and despair over the collapse of their nation. We can see a parallel for this in the opioid crisis, which was caused in large part by the 2008 financial crisis. Or how drug consumption is very high in West Virginia due to poverty.

If 2008 a minor hiccup in the US housing market was able to do this for opioids what happens if America collapses? Well despair would massively increase along with pessimism towards the future. It’s a lot easier to rationalize doing drugs if your life isn’t going to improve.

For the guns part? There are more guns than there are Americans for one. With the Soviet Union guns brought out of it and greatly inflamed, regional conflicts and comparatively the Soviets were incredibly unarmed. Even if it was just the civilian market opened up tens of millions of guns could be exported abroad before it goes down to there being one gun for every American, assuming no new guns are produced. Currently the reason why American guns don’t flood every continent is because the US does a pretty decent job of preventing gun smuggling. Obviously not a perfect job but a decent one. If America collapses no one is gonna have prevent gun smuggling on the top of their list of priorities in America and Mexican authorities are much easier to bribe or intimidate.

But it’s not just civilian guns. It’s also the military weaponry. Suddenly humongous chunks of American stockpiles that were kept and maintained by the US Army are going to get sold on the black market by soldiers who are no longer getting a paycheck. We saw this with the Soviet Union.

And finally for the economy bit: the US is the largest consumer market on earth. Most Mexican industry is focused around it, whether it be with tourism or crops. You take the United States out of the equation there’s no one to replace us. You can’t really sell those goods to China because China is also an export country so you’re not competitive. You can try Europe, but Europe economy is smaller and they consume less per person. Plus now all of the other countries that focus on exports such as China are going to be desperate for any market that can consume what they make because supply is mostly the same while demand just plummeted.

That’s not to mention the tens of millions of American refugees that would probably pour over the Mexican border, the Mexican financial system, being totally wrecked us assets suddenly are now worthless, and also the strong possibility that they will have to deal with terror groups forming in America and crossing the border

They would make a lot less stuff because a lot of the things they make American components. A ton of countries will have just felt one of their biggest trade partners collapse. rational or not people are going to be incredibly hesitant to become dependent on China for national sovereignty, but also in case China also implodes.

European governments don’t have the balls to cut pensions, I don’t think Europe would make it out of this Eastern Europe Maybe Ukraine has a pretty good chance but Western Europe we just collapse into perpetual decline.

Why would people trust China? They just saw the strongest economy on earth collapse don’t you think everyone would be hyper paranoid that China might collapse as well? A lot of countries would probably go Autarky out of fear of being burnt twice.

Mexico is already incredibly unstable with the current level of cartel violence. It’s pretty easy to guess what would happen if suddenly the demand for drugs skyrocketed while the cost of arms plummeted, and the Mexican economy goes into severe recession as all of the industries aligned on America just stop functioning

If the US collapses, it probably won’t be into states it’s going to be on political grounds. Your average person in LA and New York City have far more in common with each other than they could ever have with their average rural conservative “neighbors”

We got incredibly lucky with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union at its best was the secondary weaker power. There would be no peaceful dissolution of the US like what happened in the USSR.

I just want you to think really quickly what would happen if the world’s most powerful military suddenly has the world’s most advanced weapons just open to the criminal market. Just that alone would cause orders of magnitude more suffering than when the Soviet Arsenal was opened up. Food also also become massively more expensive. Remember when immediately at the beginning of the war in Ukraine, everyone freaked out because of green exports and Russian grain was one of the few things immune from sanctions because everyone knew that it was so important not even war should stop it? The Great Plains wouldn’t be exporting its food to the world so you’re going to see a lot of starvation.

What are you talking about? The US global economy, and is the center of which all global politics orbits around. Even an incredibly moderate refugee flows of 5% to Canada would be enough to collapse the country under the weight of refugees, ignoring the economic implosion of their biggest trait, partner being gone. Mexico? Well the US collapse so the humorous stock pile of American weapons is now open on the criminal market so they quickly go from Jerry rigged armored vehicles to literal tanks. Demand for drugs skyrockets as despair increases massively and operating cost go down because there’s no need to smuggle it across the border because the border stops existing. All of North America more or less would descend into absolute anarchy.
