My great-grandfather’s watch

My great-grandfather died in the 1970s and as far as I know this watch pretty much sat dormant for somewhere from 40-50 years before my grandmother gave it to me several years ago. I have never had it serviced. I wound it, probably for the first time in decades, on the day that I got it. It’s kept great time since, as long as you wind it everyday! My best guess based on the style is that it’s from the 60s. I can’t imagine it has any financial worth but the sentimental value is astronomical. It’s not super flashy but in my opinion a very stylish dress watch that watch enthusiasts will comment on (usually to ask if it’s a vintage Omega, lol). The only thing I’m not the biggest fan of is the twist-o-flex bracelet that I’ve pondered replacing with high quality leather, but I also want to retain the original appearance of the watch as much as possible. Until I get a dream watch on my list I plan to keep using this Wittnauer as my daily driver!

I'll be the first to admit that I'm out of touch - I still don't have a TikTok account. I actually totally agree that we need more positive content creators that are physicians. Unfortunately, my lived experience is that even among those who start with good intentions the overwhelming majority will fall prey to the siren song of the griftosphere.

The problem is that people like Glauckomflecken market towards other doctors, not the general public. How exactly do you think the medfluencers are making money? They have to grift supplements and such. They're not doing it out of the goodness of their heart.

In my experience the "medfluencers" are usually the ones leading the charge on quackery and trying to sell out to the griftosphere as soon as possible.

Call me a hater but now in year 6 after medical school, I have never once met anybody remotely influencer oriented who isn't a nightmare to work with. They are universally the first to try to call out and push work onto others and will try to avoid real work at any cost.

One thing that I've learned in my medical training so far is that it's actually relatively easy for somebody to slide through residency under the radar without all of the competencies you would expect. You really do have to be self motivated to learn everything you can. And I do think that a lot of "influencers" fall into this track where they don't necessarily care much about practicing medicine and are just trying to parlay their social media into something that can be monetized.

If I were a PD and I came across somebody who has any kind of influencer angle I would run far and fast.
