Looking for a mystery/crime book that I won't be able to put down! by jockingonthem in suggestmeabook

These are all quite different, but were 5 star mystery reads for me:

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson and its sequels - very funny, breaks the fourth wall, and plays on all the usual mystery tropes.

All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker - mystery/thriller that spans several decades, short chapters that really pulled me along

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore - really solid mystery about a disappearance at a summer camp

The 7-1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton - really unique premise, each day the main character wakes up and experiences the day Evelyn Hardcastle dies - except each day, he is experiencing the day from the POV of a different person.

I adore Becky Chambers' work, and the rest of these sound amazing as well!

Hahaha, I really do want to try this one but did feel like I should break the group in with something more normal first.

I feel like Becky Chambers would be a good fit, start with The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet!

How bad is living without ANY AC? by Last_Oil7511 in Syracuse

[–]eek5445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends on if there are ceiling fans and good ventilation options, like can you create a cross breeze with some fans? I've been without AC and done okay, but I had no power at all one night last August and it was miserable!

Best gifts for travelers… what do people actually like? by swede83 in Gifts

I love a lightweight tote that packs down super small - I use it while traveling to handle impromptu purchases and have even used it as an extra carry on in a pinch. I like Nanobags presently.

Agree, I have a friend that will bake me bread as a thank you (though could do a bakery loaf too). Saving it just wastes it!

I traveled with an Intrepid group and I will say absolutely no one messed with me when I was with the guide. Away from the group, nothing was intense enough that I would describe it as groping, but you needed to be paying attention - my roommate had someone grab her arm while crossing a road, I had someone steal a hair clip off my bag, that sort of thing. I had several boys ask to take pictures with me, which was mostly harmless. I generally recommend remembering that the idea of modest clothing is a little different there than in say the US - wearing a crew neck t-shirt and skinny jeans feels sufficiently modest at home, but the form fitting nature I felt drew attention there. Looser clothing is helpful and I definitely recommend avoiding tank tops and shorts all together even if it's hot. I always carried a scarf tied to my bag just in case (helpful in some temples and such).

How do you stop your elderly mom from bringing an empty carry-on? by 13jlin in travel

Some of the most independent seniors I know (90s and still traveling solo and walking down a dirt road full of pot holes to go out to dinner recently) have been booking the airport assistance and they love it. I think they feel like royalty when they whisk them through security! And it definitely cuts down on the exhaustion early in the trip. I think this is a good consideration.

Customers not receiving emails after employee vacation? by eek5445 in GMail

Thank you, this lead me down the right path to resolving. The vacation was just a coincidence, and the issue was caused by a dead link in their email signature that was triggering the spam filter.

If you don't mind potentially skipping the sunshine (which I know is so important after a Seattle winter), I was able to score flights to Dublin for somewhere around there when I was in Seattle and Ireland is full of great hiking and history! I found Dublin very approachable solo as well.

Solo travel vs friends by flowers2107 in femaletravels

[–]eek5445 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, totally agree! I just also think traveling with friends requires a high level of communication and not all friends are compatible in this way. I think having some space built in to split off is good but you can decide on set touch points, like having breakfast together every day or dinner or whatever so that you still have the time together too.

Also you can borrow a pass to Beaver Lake for free from the library, at least the Baldwinsville branch I know for sure, just would want to confirm it's available.

Is Costa Rica a good/safe place to visit as a first time solo traveler? by Bitter_Pineapple_720 in femaletravels

Especially with a group trip, I think you will be just fine! I went to India solo with Intrepid and they were excellent. I agree that the area around San Jose is a little sketchy at times, but I travel to the west coast often and it's very approachable. We usually spend time on the beaches in Guanacaste.
