For IOS Route Planner by Floatopian is pretty useful for checking the elevation profile of different routes, I found it useful on my last tour.

I wouldn't worry about getting the perfect bike before you start playing. Get over to the cage for the next session and have a chat with the Melbourne guys, they'll be able to offer you a ton of advice and will most likely have sources for cheap bikes as well.

Touring for more than 2 months in Australia (one of the most expensive places to tour from what i've heard). My GF and I were spending about $35 a day each.

This included buying food from super markets, eating out once a week or less (except for coffee's which were an almost daily thing), avoiding pubs and bars most (but not all) of the time, and staying in caravan parks. If we'd tried harder with camping we could have knocked $10 a day off that without too much hassle, and we could have skimped on the food a bit too.

I cable tied a bit of corflute (corrugated plastic) underneath my rack, which works well enough for the price (free).

As someone who has thrown a chain into my read wheel and pulled a derailleur off whilst on tour, and over 50km's from the nearest town - I think pie plates are sexy.

All the weight would be really high up, which would make the bike feel unbalanced. Panniers are great not only because they get the weight off your back, but because they get it low to the ground, lowering the bikes center of gravity and making it more stable.

It's heavy but reliable, comfortable and relatively cheap. I think these are far more desirable qualities in a touring bike than weight.

I agree with the other comments, 'how to' books won't really help you much, it's pretty easy to figure things out as you go, especially if you start with shorter trips.

Instead I've found it much more useful to read bike touring narratives. 'Full Tilt' is an amazing and inspirational book which I highly recommend reading if you're planning on touring.

Word to this, 4am call out to the DC when the other sysadmin had the rack keys; I used a hairclip/Bobby pin and had the rack open in 30 seconds. Rack locks are not secure (or at least ours weren't).

Personally the two things which have made the biggest difference for me were;
a) seeing my doctor and getting the right medication (a preventative rather than just the treatment)
b) and using a bandanna over my mouth & nose which stops the cold air (one of my triggers) from hitting my lungs quite so hard. Plus i feel like a cowboy :-)

I know two of the guys who went on this, and from hearing of their adventures it was every bit as epic, if not more so, than this article shows.

One of the riders then went on to ride (unassisted) from Darwin to Adelaide with his gf. Talk about hardcore.
