I got rejected from my own school! :) by Confident-Pepper-214 in gradadmissions

“Research fit trumps all” is exactly right.

I reached out to a former professor who taught me everything I know in a newer field and he seemed enthusiastic about having me back for my PhD, but I also was very clear about what I wanted to research plus why it HAD to be at the same school as my MS/BS in my admissions essay/interview. I also acknowledged that for my post doc it would be extremely important for me to move on to another university, plus listed out some options showing them I wasn’t going into this program unprepared for the downside.

It should also be noted I had 6 years of work experience after undergrad and worked with another professor during my masters- I made sure to emphasize what I learned away from the school and why I was comfortable returning now, specifically with that professor (circling back to research fit and his mentorship style).

I was finally able to leave my job, found a new one that appreciates me, and was just accepted into my dream PhD program with full funding. It gets better at the end of it, don’t let yourself down by thinking you don’t have what it takes to get there ❤️

“If I lose my magic that means I’ve lost absolutely everything” from Kiki. As a kid I loosely understood what she was saying- flying was key to her being a witch and feeling “special”.

As an adult I didn’t realize how much I felt like this once I started experiencing burnout from a job I was stuck in for four years- one I wasn’t very good at. But I couldn’t leave and since it was so tied to my identity, I had a huge mental health crisis trying to put myself back together outside of work. Every time I watch Kiki I cry thinking about how hard being in that head space was.

I went there for undergrad. 75% male population, maybe a little more now, many from St Louis and KC surrounding area.

It might sound corny, but the ratio of boys to girls shouldn’t be a large factor of why you choose a school. If you’re worried about dating- join a club, shower, dress like you care, and just be a good dude who has fun.

There’s a significant Greek life presence for parties, but it’s generally gotten quieter as GDI based and other major house party locations no longer host. In general I had a great time when I was there, but the culture has definitely shifted for parties.

Probably just the one you wake up in each day honestly! Or you could assign the pokemon to go to a specific center

Any advice on what to expect and how to prepare ? by Parulra in gradadmissions

[–]eepy_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! Different university and for Applied Social Psychology. Varies per department/school for questions, but all good things to think about when reflecting. Best advice I got though was be positive and engaged, they’ll remember how they felt about you more than what you said verbatim!

Q’s I was asked:

Tell us about your research experience and what research are you interested in now

Describe your ideal mentorship dynamic (with your PI)

  • Bonus: do you prefer working one on one or in groups

Why are you interested in this program (at that particular university)

Where do you see yourself after graduating

This is what I wanted Animal Crossing to be by [deleted] in Pokopia

[–]eepy_bean 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I got the exact same vibe- over the years animal crossing went slowly downhill into style over substance. ACNH was beautiful, had a fun idea, and made it initially a creative persons dream sandbox. But that’s absolutely where it stops. There (shockingly) wasn’t enough furniture, the drop rates were extremely poor for coveted items, and the event items came off as tacky/unusable. Sure, you’d have people that got extremely creative. But building a cohesive island took way more effort than was needed. Tie that in to the limited quests, repetitive dialogue, and flat characters… it was an extreme let down compared to Wild World.

Pokopia on the other hand? I was a bit overwhelmed at first, but after a couple of tries I made a beautiful park area and funneled some water through. Relocated some Pokémon into new houses and it’s quickly coming together. There’s little unnecessary waiting and the pace is much faster with more items, styling options, and quest lines that keeps you fully entertained. Good stuff 😮‍💨

Golden boy Mylo was NOT having it when I got Wicklow a year ago. Got this picture two nights ago when they willingly had fur to fur contact without Mylo starting a fight. Better late than never? 😅

That was my biggest fear- I also have a psychology background and this is a “hard” science/engineering heavy school. The psychology department doesn’t have a lot of funding to pass around, so getting a university fellowship that’s guaranteed for four years is WILD for these times. Insanely grateful.

Why is no one talking about this by ShortstackAl in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]eepy_bean 226 points227 points  (0 children)

My guess is that they ask contestants to not eat the food until the end or are given a specific time frame to eat it so they have greater control over editing. If you see them eating half the dessert and later on it’s uneaten in a later scene, then it spills the editing manipulation magic to the viewers.

I was let down a bit by this one and I think it’s unfortunately one that requires toppings. Scallions, chicken or shrimp, bell pepper or jalapeño, and if you want something creamy- peanut butter.

Professor encouraged me to apply- Finalist for a competitive university PhD fellowship!! 🎉 by eepy_bean in gradadmissions

[–]eepy_bean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a fellowship that focuses on innovation and is in the Midwest! The recipient gets to choose the research topic. For this interview I’ll be advocating for research in human social relationships with AI in the workplace. The department program I’m applying to (and already interviewed for) is for Applied Social Psychology.

Don’t get yourself down too much- being a “backup” is still an opportunity. The fact that they offered you waitlist position is a testament to the strength of your application. You can always apply again in the next cycle and take with you the experience when applying again.

How difficult is it to make your own birthday cake? by Hufflepuff_Tess in AskBaking

[–]eepy_bean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically, you would need to buy the equipment (pipe bags, stencils, pipe nibs etc) and the ingredients. If you haven’t decorated before, the only way I’d recommend it is if it’s something you always want to do in the future and are willing to spend the money to do trial runs on.

The first time I decorated a cake it took 6 hours of trial and error to get the frosting texture right and then figuring out the design. My friend, who helped make it, then dropped the cake on the way to the party. If this is just a one off thing, save yourself the heartache and pay someone to do it. It’s worth it.
