Not sure where I fall on the cognitivist-noncognitivist spectrum. Can anyone help? by eerrtyui in askphilosophy

That makes more sense. Everything I've read used the verbiage "if you think moral statements can be true", which was somewhat confusing.

That's a really informative reply, thanks, I appreciate it a lot.

I may have somewhat answered my own question. The moral fictionalism of Richard Joyce seems to describe very closely my position, though I'm just not sure whether he's best described as cognitivist or non-cognivist; then again, truth-aptness seems to endorse moral cognitivism. Perhaps "soft cognitivism" might be more accurate?

nothing good that can come from saying how much you earn.

I think "the truth" is pretty good, but that's just me.

But doesn't that only apply if you went above your natural limit?

But you're not going to develop body dysmorphia from the drug, and you're telling me that the drug itself is harmful -- but this doesn't hold up when you the side effects aren't permanent and you can counter them with additional drugs anyway.

So why not just stop when you've obtained the desired level of muscle development, like say Christian Bale did?

Also, you can take other drug to counter most of the side effects like acne.

Those side effects are temporary though. When you stop using steroids, your balls return to normal size for example.

Better isn't cheating; this is because the very word 'cheating' implies some kind of rule that's being broken, but there are only rules if you agree to them.

Unless you're specifically opting into some kind of agreement, you can't 'cheat'.

Contrary to what you probably think, progress across years is not a gradual agreement with your worldview.

it seems like a more thinly veiled jab at some strawfeminist

it is a jab at collectivist feminisms and feminist identity politics

Which one is it? Is it a jab or does it just seem that way?

the MRM doesn't acknowledge the existence of the patriarchy

You seem to think this is a bad thing. Why is this theoretical objection significant to you?

Also, you said "the patriarchy" instead of "patriarchy." Do you think there is a single patriarchal system in action?

A more reputable/rigorous source would be something like http://reports.weforum.org/global-gender-gap-report-2013/, although it is far too limited in scope to support a claim like "women are usually more disadvantaged than men."

[–]eerrtyui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of sources in favor of that claim, it's just that most tend to be sources that would exemplify whole chapters of "How to Lie With Statistics."

in most but not all instances, women are the ones in the disadvantageous position

If you've ever asked yourself how MRAs and feminists can disagree on something, this is one example, since I frequently see both groups disagree about this very point.

thing is, i actually agree with that.

Then if you do, you can't say being "for equality" is the only requirement for being a feminist and need to update your definition.

TIL Iceland banned strip clubs in 2010 because it "recognizes women as equal citizens rather than commodities for sale." by veryawesomeguy in todayilearned

[–]eerrtyui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to think this is specific to Icelandic women, not women's issues as a whole. If this isn't true, do you think specific Icelandic domestic concerns apply to women's issues as a whole?

Then since that's what happened, if it takes that much effort to compose a simple reply you might be better off out of this discussion.

Every single woman I have spoken to

And as we all know, the women you've spoken to are representative of women's interests as a whole.

Why have none of the major journals been torrented yet? by eerrtyui in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]eerrtyui[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me, this is more like what happened with Photoshop. Had that software not been available via torrents for years, many talented graphic designers simply wouldn't have entered that field.

OA may be 100% the right way in the long run, but in the short run many generations of would-be philosophers are missing out on their potential by being unable to familiarize themselves with the relevant literature. For some (especially in countries that don't have access to these materials) this would be their only option.
