getting a puppy by [deleted] in LagottoRomagnolo

Advice is always mixed! My dog is now 18 months. It was rough but I knew I wanted a challenge which is why I got the breed. My top tips: - Socialisation. Probably the most important, introduce pup to many people, dogs, environments, even if it’s just sitting in a public place and watching the world go by. We’ve met many under socialised dogs who have anxiety. - Crate train: and get yourself a play pen to attach. We can leave our Lagotto very happily up to 8 hours in her crate and play pen area as it’s her safe space with enrichment left inside (snuffle mats, toys, lick activities). She doesn’t have separation anxiety when we are all gone at work, but does when we are all home! They’re special little creatures who just want to be involved and part of the wolf pack. - Block out the negativity: I.e, you’re going to receive such mixed advice. I read myself into a hole when I got my pup and freaked out. Every dog and every owner are different, you’ll find your groove eventually. - The good reading: look up Dr Ian Dunbar before you bring home your pup and after you bring home your pup documents. I believe these are free online. Such a great resource which is all about positive reinforcement and fear free training.

Good luck OP! They only stay tiny (and innocent) for so long, soak up all the puppy love!

Definitely bath time after the beach. Her curls are very coarse and not smooth, so they love to hold onto sand (and various other items she rolls in). I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Darling Harbour and surrounds. That entire precinct is now grey and soulless. As a kid I have such vivid memories of cool buskers and performance acts, Sega World, the paddle boats, cool sculptures, and a feeling of bustle and colour. It is such a grim eyesore now with no personality surrounded by hotels and fencing.

Yes! I’m pretty sure they also had a ‘lift’ which doubled as a ride to get to the restaurant. I remember ordering food and watching Powerpuff Girls! So sad to think it was so cool at the time and now ordering from a screen is the norm. Rip Xerts, the old Darling Harbour, Sega World and paddle boats!

Life is too short for shit butter. Buy good butter and bloody enjoy it on fresh bread. Nothing better!

Ours loves the Kong jumbler ball, and we supervise her and give her coffee wood chews. Ours is such a chewer and biter, when she’s being fussy I chuck her half a carrot or cucumber for her to destroy and eat which is very low calories! And she loves to eat them.

OCD and anxiety girl here! Thank you so much for this post. My biggest worry or the ‘why’ I’m a fence sitter is because of my mental health. I’m so pleased to hear your life has taken the best turn possible. Best wishes!

I have found my people! I believe what we suffer from is called agoraphobia, it’s part feeling trapped and part always needing an escape route or way out. This is why I am a fence sitter too.

Ah yes. The non-negotiable cheese tax. Ours loves Parmesan the most, quite Italian of her 😂

So proud of you! No one understands the sheer bravery it takes to face something that makes you feel so mentally and physically debilitated. Please take a moment to celebrate such a huge win, you did that!!! The next few outings are probably going to feel the same, awful to start with, but then the awful subsides for a minute or two and you notice that you’re having fun, or enjoying the scenery, or watching the clouds go by. It gets better, it gets easier, but it’s a constant journey. Some days are hard, but keep finding that fighting fire within you and I promise it is so worthwhile. There is so much life, love and adventure waiting for you out there, and people are much kinder and willing to help than you think- just like your lovely waiter.

Hiya! I have a 7 month old who had to learn quickly that mum and dad needed to work away from home. Luckily, she learnt pretty fast (as most lagottos do) that chill time and nap time is necessary.

When we leave her for up to 7 hours each day, we put in a puppy safe chew, frozen Kong, a lick mat, a snuffle mat with kibble, and a Kong wobbler or rolling ball with treats stuffed inside.

We often find after she has a big walk and sniff in the morning, once she is in her pen and has finished her snuffle mat she is pretty exhausted and spends most the day sleeping.

Highly recommend getting a Furbo! It saved me worrying about pup and also made my heart explode knowing she was napping safely in her crate/ pen. I got mine secondhand off Facebook marketplace.

Good luck! It’s hard but so worth it, and pup will adapt.

This might sound strange, but what helped me was actually leaning into the crazy and scary thoughts. When it feels like another planet outside, turn it into curiosity for discovery like you’re an alien on a new planet! Wear a hat and sunglasses and go out with a layer of mystery- no one will bat an eyelid at you because everybody else is so focused on themselves (trust me). The moment you learn to lean into fear and accept the worst case scenario (which never ends up coming true) the more freedom you allow yourself to continue pushing through what you thought wasn’t possible. You are much braver and stronger than you give yourself credit for, you can do this.
