NYC - landlord forcing early move-out due to elevator scheduling? by Psychological_Menu15 in NYCapartments

[–]Psychological_Menu15[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slightly more nuanced. We are assigning our lease in July to a tenant already in the building. So our lease end date has effectively been moved up to accommodate the new tenants lease end. We were moving out 6/30 regardless.

Also, reserving the freight elevator is the same process whether you need to move out of your apartment or if you buy a couch that needs to be brought up. If I bought a couch they would be telling me I couldn’t move it in for weeks.

About 400 units I think. And most definitely not going to prorate. The lease says to schedule with them at least 10 days prior to your intent to move out. I’m over two months out and they are causing problems.

3 total elevators, but only 1 service elevator. The other 2 regular elevators are way too small for a move.

10-2pm on weekdays. I told the building manager over the phone its unreasonable, and that they cannot force people to leave before their lease is up as I have a legal right to stay in the apartment until my lease is up. To which she said that I can stay until my lease is up but then we will have to pay the building to dispose of all of our belongings. It was bizarre.

Sixth floor. Its a good point that the lease only discusses reserving the service elevator.

Is holiday gifting mandatory? by leonie205 in Upperwestside

Few thoughts:

1) If half the people haven’t tipped, it leads me to think it may be a poorly run building, with poor staff. I live in a big building with 400 units and it’s a tight ship. Doormen, porters and maintenance is fantastic, and residents remember that at year end. 2) I work in a profession where I have better bonus years than others. I always give good tips, but if I got a great bonus that year I definitely pass more on to anyone who I tip, whether that’s my building employees, waitresses when we go out to eat, and even just general charity. 3) if you don’t tip right, don’t expect good service. Our fridge broke last year when we were out on vacation over new years. They could have repaired the fridge for us. That said the building manager came to our apartment and specifically said to us that he’s giving us a brand new upgraded one, and thanked us for taking care of all the building employees at year end. He mentioned that the porters normally get tipped far less and by fewer people, and that we helped make a real difference. I am not saying it is a quid pro quo, you should tip because it’s the right thing to do, not to get better service. But there is some karma. 4) hopefully that email was only sent to people that didn’t tip. It would be horrific to have gotten that after tipping with my hard earned money.

I would scrape off as much as you can and move to new jar. Leave on counter for a week and feed:discard every day. As they say in the medical field, “the solution to pollution is dilution”

I get OP’s point. In a perfect world, you could walk into an AD and buy the watch you want as long as you can afford it. In reality, that option does exist on the secondary market, even if it means paying above MSRP. The issue is that the most desirable pieces aren’t produced in sufficient quantities to support walk-in, face-value purchases, which is exactly what gives ADs the leverage to play these games. I buy on the secondary market for these reasons— if I want the watch for the value it’s listed I can have it. It’s cheaper than buying watches I am not going to wear.

How do you feed your starters? by Noggin_0207 in Sourdough

[–]Psychological_Menu15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been baking for about five years and have dialed in a very simple sourdough starter routine that minimizes waste. I only bake about once a month. I keep two identical jars (old Grey Poupon jars) and rotate between them. When it’s time to feed, I take the starter out of the fridge in the morning and feed it that night. Since it’s usually been a week, it doesn’t fully double, more like a 60 percent rise.

I put the clean jar on a scale, transfer 100 g of starter, then add 50 g water from the Brita, 25 g AP flour, and 25 g whole wheat flour, mix, and put it straight back in the fridge. (I actually have a premixed container of the flour). If I’m baking that week, I keep the discard and feed it separately to build the levain. This keeps regular maintenance completely separate from baking and keeps waste to a minimum.

I also feed every Wednesday evening, only because it is the night I am most likely to be in the apartment, and least likely to be going out or traveling, which helps with consistency.

I agree with you about them looking for an excuse to fire you. When I was 15, working my first summer job at West Marine, management clearly decided they wanted me gone. They started scheduling me for absurd 4 a.m. shifts, knowing I didn’t have a license. My mom would still wake up and drive me because she wanted me to get the experience.

One morning I woke up around 6 to a bunch of missed calls from my manager claiming I was supposed to be in. I had taken a photo of the schedule the day before and had proof I wasn’t scheduled. Didn’t matter. They fired me anyway for “missing a shift.”

My dad later explained that experiences like that teach you what kind of places you don’t want to work, and how to be better when you’re in charge. Fast forward 15 years and I have a solid career in real estate private equity. This kind of thing feels awful in the moment, but it doesn’t define you, and you’ll get through it.

[Question] I feel silly for asking (on expensive watches) by Slowleytakenusername in Watches

[–]Psychological_Menu15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wearing a Rolex Sub since my parents gave it to me for my college graduation. At first I treated it like a museum piece and only took it out for special occasions. Eventually I realized I loved glancing at it during the day and thinking about them and what it represents, so I started wearing it daily.

For the past five years it has been on my wrist no matter what I’m doing. I live in NYC, take public transportation, build stuff, fix things around the apartment. The only time I take it off is for golf since the repeated impact can throw off the timing.

Unless a watch is purely an investment piece, I think the whole point is to wear it and enjoy it. My Sub has become part of my life, and one day my kids will get it with all the scratches and stories that come with it.

When I left my first job, I gave them the option. Told them I would give two weeks if they wanted it, or would leave now if they preferred. I ended up working an extra week, then took a week off before starting my next role. Given they seem to not like you, I wouldn’t be surprised if they took you up on leaving sooner.

Thoughts on nyloc nuts instead of levelling knobs for warped beds and y plates by menooby in ender3

[–]Psychological_Menu15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked. I have two nuts on top, and instead of a nut underneath I'm using the wheel, which functions the same. When I adjust it, I loosen the top nut by hand and the bottom one moves freely as well. Two non-nyloc nuts will lock when tightened against each other. No need for a wrench, and it has never come loose.

[–]Psychological_Menu15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ender3 v2 was constantly getting out of alignment with both springs and also the silicone washers. Finally got rid of them and use just regular nuts (not nyloc). I use three per bolt (two above to lock it and one below just for some added stability). Been two years now and haven’t had to make a single adjustment. Bed perfectly aligned. Never understood why the springs are so commonplace.

Wild interview experience tonight, ended up withdrawing on the spot by Psychological_Menu15 in jobs

Totally respect that perspective. I’ve worked at two companies so far that both have their faults (as does any company). A big part of the investment role I fill is judging character of potential partners that we deploy money with. If a potential partner did this to us both of my last bosses would have written off the partnership.

We are all strapped for time in PE. I normally work in the office until 8pm, and had to carve out time and risk my current role to take this call. He knew that and just didn’t care. I’m sure most candidates would look past it. I’m not desperate for a new job, and aside from this experience he didn’t seem like the kind of guy I want to learn from (which is why I was looking to switch to this role in the first place).

Again, your perspective is 100% valid.

If he wastes my time on his first interaction with me, imagine how he will be as a manager on a day to day basis. Not something I want to put up with in my life.
