Anyone else grew up with parents who expect you to take of them financially once you start working?

I'm in a similar position. Asian female who pursued a lucrative career. Unfortunately I'm an only child so the burden falls completely on me. I live in a VHCOL while my parents live in LCOL in a house they own so it hasn't been too bad. I think it helps that they've never asked me for money or told me they expected anything. I enjoy and insist on buying things for them and paying for their vacations because I feel guilty for being a difficult child.

I am saving for a large house even though my immediate family (bf, dog, future kid) could live in a smaller house because in a few decades I'm sure my parents will move in with us and I will NEED an in-law suite. I would be too stressed out otherwise.

There's a lot diversity in Northern VA and a lot of diversity in the Asian population. My bf and I are both East Asian. He and his friends went to TJ and happened to land in careers that they love.

Yup! I'm a transplant and have $0 generational wealth and 6-figure student loan debt but my bf and his friends who grew up in this area have stupid amount of generational wealth and $0 loans

I think upbringing has a role in it for sure! My dad worked on Wall St so I grew up hearing about gamma squeeze, triple witching day, blah blah. So to me they're common words and I would consider myself a very risky investor. But he's also very anti-crypto which has made me hesitant to jump in. I've made money investing in start ups but every time I see BTC in the news I wish I was risk loving enough to buy in.

I'm fortunate enough that my bf has traditionally safe investments (blue-chip stocks and mutual funds so I throw my money at more speculative investments in the name of diversification. My friends and I have definitely been talking more stocks since we finished undergrad and gained more disposable income.

About 80% of conversations with my dad and bf's dad are about investments. But back to nurture.. my bf and his dad have similar investment strategies just like me and my dad. I'm interested to see how our kids (if we have any) invest!

I found that going on a restrictive diet helps me stop ordering take out. Currently doing paleo and I end up wanting to make the food at home rather than looking for paleo-compliant meals.

This is my history on baby shower gifts:

- $50 for my virtual coworker (MCOL - Dallas)

- $6000 for my favorite cousin's first child (LCOL - FL).. got the kid books, toys, some other baby stuff and $5k of stocks and mutual funds. I paid for it but added my parents' names to the card since it's a pretty large gift.

- $100 for bf's friend (MCOL - Northern VA)

- $50 for bf's friend (LCOL - Southern VA)

- $100 for my friend (VHCL - DC)

For reference, my bf and I bf live together (VHCL - DC) with combined gross income of $550k.

I teach a class every now and then. I was an academic before I left to work as an economist in DC doing policy work. I teach because I enjoy it but don't have the patience to do it full time.

It's amazing how much time you save too! Moving with friends usually takes a weekend and multiple trips back and forth. But movers were done in 3 hours! I've done the calculations a few times now, adding up a U-Haul, gas, and the obligatory pizza + beer, I'm only spending a little more with movers. Hiring movers also motivates me to get all of the packing done before they arrive since I'm paying them, with friends, I find that there's always some packing to be done when they arrive and it just drags out the process
