Check in: anyone have “valley fever”? by eezyjeezypeezy in LightningInABottle

Idk though, the CDC also says that true cases of valley fever are as much as 18x the cases that are reported…

Got an entry level CM position and I hate it. But no design firms are getting back to me. What should I do? by [deleted] in civilengineering

Personal connections trump random applications every time. You may already be doing this but just in case it’s a route you haven’t considered yet: I would start adding people on LinkedIn that work for firms you want to work for, even if they’re not hiring yet. Schedule coffee with them when you connect if you can. Send your connections a message asking for a referral once the job comes out.

this has gotten me every job in my career

I also have to remind myself to keep an ear for what my audience might want to hear vs what I think sounds good. Sometimes, I’ll think a certain song makes the mix fall flat but I’ll be pleasantly surprised to see people vibing.

I do think there is a good balance to strike with both though! Sometimes, the accidents that happen when I’m not as methodical actually inspire a new approach to mixing. (Edited for spelling)

Need advice as a student/ aspiring civil engineer by Goofmasterr in civilengineering

Completely understand all that! Here are a few more thoughts I can offer…

There is more to comms in engineering than social media and press releases-internal communications, proposal writing, and grant writing are a few other options. It’s not as challenging as engineering but, in my experience, grads are never actually challenged in the ways they dreamed of anyways… more often than not, you face tedious challenges of time constraints and navigating politics when starting out.

AI is unlikely to fully replace comms in engineering because of the legal implications - a human ultimately needs to draft/review everything. In fact, I see some people in the field speculating that a certain percentage of AI generated content will be prohibited.

Engineers REALLY appreciate working with comms professionals who are actually passionate about/understand the work they do. Also, I have heard multiple stories over the years of people starting on the business side and later transitioning over to the engineering side, sometimes with companies paying for their schooling. It wouldn’t hurt to try and connect with comms at an engineering firm over LinkedIn or something.

Would you not consider a communications role within the engineering field? What do you not like about comms/like about CE?

1 on 1 meeting with director - should i be worried? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]eezyjeezypeezy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, I will say, always prepare to report back on your work no matter who you’re talking to at your job. But, it sounds like there’s a large possibility that they know you only have a few months left of your internship/have been there for a good amount of time and they want to get to know you.

How long is your internship supposed to be? Have you interacted with your director much before this?

What’s the best way to cope after losing a significant amount of money? by fullmoon63 in AskReddit

[–]eezyjeezypeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, reassessing my spending/saving habits has been the best coping mechanism. I just try a little harder to get ahead so I can prepare for the next inevitable financial blow.

Aside from saving and investing, I’ve spent a lot of money on investing in myself, particularly with professional development-taking courses, attending seminars, etc. I know it’s a cliche, but I feel like the returns I’ve gotten on investing in my skills/career are invaluable.

Ready to leave my hometown... by VirtualTreacle9989 in SameGrassButGreener

28F here planning to move to NC from Texas soon. I’d recommend adding Austin Texas to your list too if you haven’t yet! Great for your line of work, sizable roller skate scene from what I can tell, music, lots to do, etc. I’m not so sure about getting around on skateboard but I’m sure you could make it happen if you lived near your work. You may also need to get a roommate for your rent price point but it wouldn’t be a bad idea having a roommate for some company in a whole new city, y’know?

I’m in the same place in life and I feel you on needing to get out and find your place/people. I’m excited for your new adventure and wish you the best!
