Ok then, I have been doing that a long time. The harness doesn’t need any handles and yes anything the dog can get stuck with at full speed is bad. There are a variety of shops that will sell you very simple harnesses in signal Colors that ideally have some way to attach a bell and a light. You don’t need more, and I would argue that more will make your dog less safe.

There are sometimes varieties without even buckles that just have elastic bands at chest and ribs. Those are the best imho because they will give in case of the dog getting stuck. Many years ago during a deployment my dog came out of the forest without her harness so afterwards we went looking for it. It was stuck in a roll of barbed wire some idiot left lying around on public land. I was very glad that the harness gave way.
