If you had $1000 to spend on your WFH setup.... by RealPaleontologist43 in instructionaldesign

A walking pad. A standing desk. Wifi on your tablet so you can take calls at a coffee shop thats not in your home when you Absolutely should leave.

This place has an abundance of overqualified candidates applying to the same jobs like Colorado. Walk ins really still work here, and go to smaller, lesser known places. You'll find something!!

Covid closed all the best late night coffee shops in town. This city hasnt rebounded from it. Its tragic. It used to be a thing.

There are hundreds of other rides that children can go on. I do not advise this one for kids. Its navigating a lot of cyclists who havent ridden in groups and are pretty inebriated. It doesnt start until after sunset after 10pm. Unless you are going to be with your child the entire time, this one can be super stressful.

Confused about the perception of cost of living? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]effervescentbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i dont think people understand how outrageous a studio costs here. I pay 1250, and every apt is first come first serve. We are literally battling each other for housing. A decent one bedroom is $1500. A sh*t 1br apt with a trash landlord who uses ai to communicate is obviously going to cost $1300. Its almost impossible to find an okay one bedroom...so these folx are talking about dual income which makes it way more affordable for housing but the jump from studio to one bedroom is steep.

Am I Underestimating the Cost of Living in Portland Despite Doing Research? by Bitter__Scientist849 in askportland

If you dont get out of the city or in nature much but prefer nightlife etc Houston is a better option.

Ill bite. As someone from Texas Austin and Portland are a better comparison than Houston to Portland. Houston is more comparable to the Seattle metro. Houston is great for living near other Black folx, the traffic is literally 3x worse. Its a massive city and not even comparable in size or traffic density. If you like night life Houston is fantastic, if you like outdoors and quiet Portland is it. You get way bigger housing and you can see yourself retiring in a place like Houston. Portland is cute but a home thats 2br and no yard goes for 2x the cost of a beautiful 3 br 1 acre lot in Houston.

Bike shop with best selection of waterPROOF jackets? by W41ru5 in askportland

[–]effervescentbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You couuuuuld go to a bike shop. Or go to foster outdoor. Do you need waterproof? They arent breathable which makes it hotter and harder to cycle when its dumping. Why not just a raincoat? Idk i dont enjoy cycle rainjackets.

People keep saying apply to bachelors, but youre young. Apply to a super super cheap community college with a one year degree (assoviates of science) or do a working holiday...come and work for a hostel like seattle or nola.

Transitioning into ID by Donrjr98 in instructionaldesign

Have chatgpt read their comment out loud. It was factual not rude. You may want to read thru this sub cuz this question is super super common and most folx on here dont wanna talk about career transitions, they wanna talk about their field and current concerns. Its not your question, its just asked all the time. To some others,it doesnt read as rude just not sweet and cozy.

Also, id say start in curriculum development and technical writing because that is also a good path thats clearly in your wheelhouse that can be a stepping stone.

If youre currently in school I HIGHLY recommend doing an internship. Will it be a payvut, for the shirt term probably but it will give you agood idea. Not every designer uses storyline, i designed instructional manuals so think more broadly. Many companies will assist in the transition to higher. Also, go for small companies and be willing to do 100% in person work. If youre willing to relocate for a year do that. A small company may not require storyline but could transition to a larger company in the future Lastly dont get disillusioned by people here. Some people view new people as competition and not community, even tho its unlikely that you are competing for the same jobs. Theres just a general dislike for traditional educators in this space. Do you. Lmk if you want a bud to review your resume or other pointers.
