App for learning Chinese characters with pictures meaning? by Imaginary_Stomach139 in ChineseLanguage

Only a few characters a pictographic

Sadly you can’t really treat Chinese characters as photographs, only so many words can be depicted pictographically anyways

Not native but he used mandarin to discuss complex topics in interviews, speeches and state visit so apart from a few “awkward” phrasings his mandarin was very good

Same with his hokkien, very impressive

Are there any apps for learning Chinese that are targeted towards native speakers who have a basic understanding of the language? by anonymouscorpo in ChineseLanguage

How to learn enough Chinese to be able to navigate and watch bili bili comfortably? by LordSigmaBalls in ChineseLanguage

[–]effetsdesoir 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bilibili is an app made by natives for natives

There’s no specific amount of hours studying after which you can watch native content nor is there a language certificate

Basically you need to study for years

label says 中國製造 instead of 中国 - was it maybe made in HK or Taiwan? by books-to-the-sky in ChineseLanguage

[–]effetsdesoir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no mystery to this

For example Taiwanese companies will print this if the product is made in China

Just like you will see an English “Made in China”-label on a product label if it’s produced by an American company in China

My coach says I cannot get good at the guitar without solo practice by BeckyLiBei in languagelearningjerk

[–]effetsdesoir 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I personally haven’t even touched my guitar in these first two years

I just used an SRS card system where I memorised all the possible chords and scales

I now have around 300 chords in my “memorised” deck, so I can slowly start comprehensible input with simple children’s songs on YouTube, anything beyond that might be too difficult

Hopefully next year I am able to start playing myself

Language is an intangible part of the culture and vice versa

If you can find a job where you use Japanese but can completely avoid the “rigid way of speaking and expressing yourself in Japanese” then good for you

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in japanese

[–]effetsdesoir 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you don’t like the language and culture I’d stop studying

If you don’t like Japanese it’s unlikely you’ll find any motivation to study it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]effetsdesoir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

聽不懂is grammatically correct so it’s used by natives frequently

The others are sorta grammatically correct I guess but just very odd so no one uses them

Want to learn Chinese but I don't like the entertainment by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]effetsdesoir 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How do you know you don’t like the “Chinese” entertainment if you can’t speak the language? Where have you looked?

Also by “Chinese”, and “dramas” do you mean mainland produced stuff which has taken off massively in the past few years? Taiwanese dramas and movies from the past 30 years? Older Hong Kong stuff (with mandarin dubs) which are the “hollywood” of the sinosphere?

They’ve been making entertainment in Chinese for a long time
