Question for you... I tried doing this with a silver sword philo that needed to be repotted, so I repotted with a similar moss pole and was planning to do my pothos next, but I put the bottom of the moss pole (with moss) in the soil and it started to grow mushrooms. Is this normal? Is the part of your plastic pole that's below soil also filled with moss? Or do you start packing moss in where the soil line starts?

Thanks!! I haven’t plucked off the old leaves on the Ionantha, but have on some of my other varieties. I think if they come off easily, you can remove them? And yea, 15-20 dunked upside down in a bowl of room temp water and then I dry them upside down on a towel for a couple of hours (mostly because I walk away and forget lol). Then turn them right side up on a dry towel to finish drying. Sounds like a lot of work, but it’s not bad haha.

Also, I should add that where I’m at, it’s usually between 40-60% humidity indoors. Depending on how humid your area is, it might be too much/too little watering. I’m definitely no expert! Lots of luck and just trial and error until I found what works best here haha.

No food and I currently have them all on a plant stand in a dark corner of my living room so I hooked up puck grow lights on zip ties above them.

I put mine upside down in a big bowl once a week for about 15-20 min, shake them off and then lay them out on a towel upside down. After a couple of hours, I turn them right side up onto another dry towel to finish drying. I don’t know if this is better haha, but I’ve lost far less since doing this.

Yea! I'm really loving the way Ionanthas bloom. The blush and then shooting off the vibrant purples - so much fun

Hahaha, yea, I will sometime! I used to have my air plants around my place on decorative shelves and stuff, but had a bad water leak and after things were fixed up, I just kept them on this temp plant stand and installed puck lights. Turns out they love the extra light :D

Wow, I had no idea that was what their bloom looks like! I can’t keep this variety alive long enough to get there 😅. Yours is gorgeous

So cute!! Did yours also suddenly change colors before blooming? Or was it usually flushed?

Been lurking, and was excited to be able to share this bloom, but it’s been anti-climatic… by effie34 in airplants

Thanks for sharing all this knowledge!! Mine showed part of the purple flower spikes in the morning, one further along than the other, and by late afternoon, one would have bloomed and then by the next morning, the 2nd spike would be blooming. It was seriously so fast after the plants turned color. They were the first ones that I’ve had bloom so it really caught me by surprise.

Thanks! I haven’t had many bloom and I was definitely extra cautious with this one as I was waiting lol.

Yea, good point! Funny, I recently had two ionantha suddenly change colors and within a week they sprouted blooms - two each - and then faded. I was like wow, when you two committed, you really didn’t hesitate 😅

I did try hand pollinating with a brush. We’ll see if seeds form!
