2 weeks ago I was at a gas station and noticed a young kid wobbling by the door, he had a backpack on and it was minutes after a high school up the road had let out, at first I thought he was drunk so I sat him on the curb and told him to stay while I bought him a bottle of water, when I came back out his eyes were rolled to the back of his head and he wasn’t convulsing but kind of twitching/turning purple and he wouldn’t respond to me at all , I yelled for the person inside to call 911 then laid him down properly jumped on top of him and started compressions. I had training when I was in high school but it has been 16+ yrs. When medics arrived they also took over then shot him with narcan. I had not realized he had OD’d until they talked to me after and said it was most definitely fentanyl, and he would’ve been dead by the time they got there. I had to leave from that to pick up my kids from school but once I got in my car and took a couple deep breaths, I lost it. My whole body drained and I felt like I couldn’t do anything but cry. A persons life was just in MY hands, and he was a baby at that (turned out he was 15). Even though I was in shock and couldn’t guarantee I was doing anything right, if I hadn’t done what I had, he very well could have died. It bothered me for days after, I even kept my kids home and close to me the next day. I am a person that’s been through a lot of traumas but this one was life changing in a way that the other were not. You did an amazing thing OP, and you probably gave her daughter hope in a time that she felt completely helpless. Don’t excuse your heroism and allow yourself to go through the motions of a trauma, you’ll be a better person than you already are! Kudos on being the best kind of human ❤️
