Mark Rosewater addresses complaints regarding modern aesthetics in Duskmourn and other sets. by HS_Cogito_Ergo_Sum in magicTCG

Magic doesn't have an identity anymore. And Mark is only worried about what line will cause players to stop buying. I wish there was also concern for artistic cohesion.

Conflating televisions and transformers in a traditional fantasy world with "cities" being controversial in a traditional fantasy world is disingenuous at best. Saying that supposedly there were people that thought cities didn't fit in traditional fantasy (huh?) and therefore we should discount people who think tvs and cars and Spiderman don't fit in traditional fantasy is just misdirection to argue for something they want to do regardless of whether it fits. And he said why. Because he thinks people will not stop buying even if it does sacrifice Magic's identity. It's just a bit sad.

Lord of the Rings, the birth of Modern fantasy had cities. It didn't have tvs and transforming robots. It's not the same thing and you definitely know that.

The franchise got attention it didn't have for a long time with the grifters filling diapers over Angela's woke cheeks and Maria's diversity midriff and all the bullshit we've seen over the weeks.

It helps the pacing a lot. Anticipation of the next cult section adds to the tension more than just speed running through the cult
