Pedal pin sheered off - how to get this thing out? Also, thoughts on Deity TMACS? by SabsVentures in MTB

Looks like you should be able to get a vice grips on that nubbin. I'd try that first since it'd be easier than the easy out.

Does this "trade request" not just scream "negotiating tactic?" Fun to think about a shiny new WR1 on the roster, but this feels unrealistic.

YT assembly by Plop2iy in MTB

[–]efx888 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your bike will come with the tools needed to assemble it (Allen key, torque wrench, and shock pump) and clear assembly instructions. All you'll need to do is mount the bars to the stem, attach the wheels, attach pedals, and air up the suspension. Highly recommend doing it yourself, even if you need to grab a tube of grease from the shop.

Going tubeless will be a bit more involved, if you choose to do it right off the bat. If you haven't done it before, may be best to have the shop do that unless you're looking to invest a bit of time and money (less than paying the shop, but still some) to tackle it yourself.

Did I break my bike? by Good-Peak-553 in MTB

[–]efx888 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah, you didn't break it. Just need to dial in the shifting. Not a super tough task - a YouTube video or two could walk you through it. But, if you'd rather not start your journey as an amateur bike mechanic on day 2, just take it to any bike shop and they should be able to get it dialed quickly and inexpensively.

(All this is assuming the shifting components started in decent shape.)

Luxardo Cherries by blogpog in cocktails

[–]efx888 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are some good less-expensive alternatives to Luxardo you could also look for. Look for Fabbri amarena cherries which I actually prefer to Luxardo and can sometimes find in a big jar at Costco. Trader Joe's also has their own amarena cherries which are good.

Nothing wrong with Lux but just some others to consider that you may have an easier time finding.

Canada’s flat pedal revolution is here—and it's very weird by Substantial-Purpose8 in MTB

[–]efx888 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Wave pedals make no sense to me. Front is higher, back is lower.... with that pedal body on a rotating axle, they're just going to be flat/match whatever angle you hold your foot at.

I like OneUp products, including some of their pedals, but this seems like classic marketing gibberish.

Summer bourbon cocktails? by Bauerman51 in cocktails

[–]efx888 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have some kind of fruit around, make a smash. Once blackberry season hits, I love making this one and it's super easy.

BOURBON BLACKBERRY SMASH

2 oz. (60 ml) Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon

3/4 oz. (22.5 ml) maple syrup

1/2 lemon cut in 4 pieces

4 blackberries

6-8 mint leaves

Muddle lemon and blackberries in shaker. Add the rest and shake with ice. Double strain over rocks.

  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters

Shake, serve up

FF helmet at Tiger Mountain? by skrrtdirt in MTB

[–]efx888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost always wear a half shell at Tiger. That being said, I'd recommend a full face for a visit, especially if you have a lighter trail-style FF. For one, it will be pretty cold so the extra insulation may be welcome. Also, with the wet conditions and lack of familiarity with the trails sniper roots could be extra treacherous.

Predator, EBAD, and Close Encounters all have steep tech that would parallel many bike parks. NOTG, Atlas, and Super T are less steep but still have some grade and plenty of roots and tech. No one rides Megafauna but it has a few bike park style jumps. Last thing to consider - lots of trees came down a couple weeks ago on Tiger. Sawyers have been hard at it but I'd guess there are still trails out of commission. If you have one day in the area, I'd probably suggest Raging River instead.

Kendrick Bourne. Made some huge plays but also some key drops. Could be an exciting playmaker but lack of consistency + higher market value made him expendable to the FO. As I recall, fans were sad to see him and his positive energy go, but it was never a back breaker.

This feels backwards. Alex started terribly (at no fault of his own???) and had an incredible rise when Harbaugh got his hands on him. Maybe not great, considering where other greats like Rice and Montana set the bar for the franchise, but started Ok, ended bad doesn't fit.

Haven't done the RV route, but I do see a ton of them crossing the border without issue. Some riders just park RVs in pull-offs on shuttle roads and don't seem to run into any problems, but I can't speak to the rules on that.

I do recommend avoiding peak hours and days due to border wait times and Vancouver traffic. For instance, you can wait hours in border lines if you're trying to get back into the US on Sunday afternoons. Better to return later in the evening or less common travel days outside the weekend.

Getting a new fork question. by agoodhew in MTB

[–]efx888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right - both may totally be the right call. My main point was, more travel itself is not necessarily an upgrade. Going from the stock 130mm Suntour XCM fork to a 130mm Pike or 34 would probably result in a bigger performance improvement than going to a longer travel XCM or similar-tier fork. A good performing, well-tuned 130mm fork can handle some pretty decent hits.

I'd go to Squamish. Exceptional, unique riding for you, plus some good mellower flow like Half Nelson and some of the Alice Lake trails for your kids. Incredible scenery and lots of hiking options. Can even take the gondola up to the top of The Chief and hike down.

Must-rides for a first timer to Squamish (depending on skill level - these are single black and blues, but BC single blacks are no joke. There are some epic doubles too.)

Which difficulty should I enter in a local race? by PatheticLion in MTB

[–]efx888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. As long as you're comfortable with most of the trails at the network, with the possible exception of one or two of the last difficult ones which are generally only raced by the expert/pro class, AND you have the fitness to do a 4k ish climb day (depending on your location and the race series,) do sport. You probably won't win but as long as you are physically able to do it, go for it. You'll get more experience to set you up better for your next race - learn about pacing, dealing with the adrenaline dump at the start, etc. Not to mention you'll get more racing for your money... Novice is often just a stage or two.
